    (its learned).
  • Differential Association and labeling theory.
  • Differential Association Theory Individuals
    learn deviance in proportion to number of deviant
    acts they are exposed to.
  • Ratio of deviant to non-deviant individuals.-if
    you know mostly deviants, you most likely learn
    it.
  • Practiced by significant others.
  • Age of exposure.

Labeling Theory
  • Labeling Theory Theory that society creates
    deviance by identifying particular members as
    deviant.
  • Example Girl gets pregnant they are seen as
    deviant, guy may not.
  • Primary Deviance
  • Deviance involving occasional breaking of norms
    that is not a part of a persons lifestyle or
    self-concept.
  • Secondary Deviance
  • Deviance in which an individuals life and
    identity are organized around breaking societys
    norms.

Consequences of Labeling
  • Can cause pain and suffering.
  • Also determine direction of lives.
  • Stigma
  • Undesirable trait or label that is used to
    characterize an individual.
  • Ex. And ex-con has a hard time getting adjusted
    back into society.
