This manual has been prepared to aid your service
department in the proper methods of overhauling
and adjusting 'VA' Series Tractors. \Jse this
manual as a ready reference. Keep it in the shop
and re fer to it when service prnplems
arise. Each major part or assembl y of the
tractor i s treated in a separate 'Group. For
instance, if the transmission is being
overhauled, all neces sary pro- cedures,
tolerances and torque tightness pertaining to the
transmit s sion and its assembly to the tractor
will be found within this specific group.

'VA' Serie s Tractor s have several units in
common such as the engine, carburetor, cooling
system, ignition system and clutch. However,
some differe rice s will be noted between
steering gears, brakes, power-take-off and axle
assemblies on certain 'VA' Tractors. In order
to provide complete service information, each
group covers all service data pertinent to all
models indicated. Certain items such as sheet
metal, seats, plat- forms, drawbars and wheel
weights, are not touched upon in this manual as
their use is rather obvious and maintenance
extremely simple. Within each section a s
chematic diagram or eaploded view of the as
sembly or unit is shown to aid the service man in
proper sequence assembly of each unit. Thi s
illustration also serves as quick identification
of the repair parts needed, which is shown in the
same type view in the Case Parts Catalog. Keep
shop equipment clean, and maintain cle an
working methods. If possible, steam clean

- USE O F THE I4AIIUAL
- This is a loose-leaf ' style manual,
designed to be permanently kept up-to-date P
eriodically, as changes, revisions or new
developments take place, this data will be
availabl e to you in the form of new filler pages
If these pages are promptly inserted in the
proper place in the manual, your service
department will constantly have up-to-the-minute
information available at their finger tips - Here is how the manual is "made up"
- GROUPS Each complete unit or subassembly is
covered in a GROUP' Groups are identified by
Roman numerals, (I, II, III etc ) The group
number and name will be found as a running
heading, at the top of each page - SECTlOHS Within each group are the "SEC-
TIONS" covering specific parts of the group
Sections are designated by letters, (A, B, C, e
tc ) In the front of each Group will be found a
list of Sections in that Group - PAGES The "PAGES" of each section ace
numbered consecutively beginning with number 1
The page numbers, (along with the Section
Letter), appear in the lower outside corner of
each page, for easy identification FIGURE
numbers are also identified in the sazac fashion
as page numbers in each section - Since it is possible to have the same page number
in the corresponding SECTION of each MAIN GROUP,
it is extremely important to always refer to the
MAI I GROUP, number wbich appears at the top Of
each page - PAGE DATE I4ARKS In the lower inside corner of
each page appears a small printing date mark
When- ever new filler pages are received,
which replace existing pages, make certain
the page with the mos t recent date mark is
inserted and the older page re- moved

12GROUP I, GENERAL SECTION D, HANDLING AND STORAGE
OF REPAIR PARTS
- REPAIR PARTSGENERAL
- Store all cepair parts in a clean, dry p1ace
- Leave all parts in original containers until
installation is made Cartons are designed to
protect machined surfaces against damage frotn
contact with other parts, as well as damage
from dirt and mois ture
ANTI- FRICTION BEARINGS 1 All anti-friction
bearings are shipped in grease proof containers
Do not remove parts from boxes until ready to
install When making installation, open
containers on a clean bench and protect bearings
from dirt and dust
2
CYLINDER S LE EYES 1 Store sets of cylinder
sleeves in original con- tainers If cylinder
sleeves are stored indi vidually, stand them on
end as shown below Do not drop sleeves or lay
them on their sides during storage distortion may
result
"fi " in
t a
cs c 3 Machined surfaces of all pacts are
coated with a filei of rust preventative oil
before being shipped from the factory Do not
remove this film of oil while parts are in s
forage If film is removed for any reason, appl
y a new coat of rust preventacive oil before
returning parts to storage
- HYDRAULC PUMPS AHD CONTROL UNITS
- All openings must be plugged during storage to
prevent dirt from entering hydra ul ic as semblie
s - Before placing units in storage make certain all
interior surfaces are coated with a film of oil - Store in a dcy bin in a location where conden-
sation is not a problem If units are to be
stored for a long period of time, remove oc-
cas ionally and inspect for signs of moisture on
interior surfaces Rust on the highl y machined
surfaces of a hydraulic unit will render it
in- operative
CRANKSHAFT AND CONNECTING ROD BEARING
LIHERS Bearing liners have highly polished
surfaces which must be protected during storage 2
Original containers separate liners to prevent
scratching of polished surfaces Do not remove
liners from carton until installation is made Do
not store liners loose in the cacton Do not touch
polished surfaces when handling bearings Contact
with hands will cause cor- rosion

13GROUP I, GENERAL SECTION D, ENGINE SERIAL NUMBERS
In several groups of this manual, reference is
made to tractor engine as sembl ie s before or
after a certain engine serial number. The same
procedure is also followed in current tractor
parts catal ops. In order to determine the
sequence in which any particular engine as sembly
was manufactured refer to the following 1isting.
The first number li sted indicate s the series
marking used on engines in the firs t VA Series
Tractor s manufactured. Changes in marking
series follow in chronological order.
or 5 digit number) or 5 digit number) or 5 digit

- (5 digit number) etc.
Current marking s ystem for engine as s emblie s
manufactured by J.I. Case Company, Rock Island,
Illinois
The current system for marking as indicated above
uses a two digit number with a letter followed by
a dash and a five digit number. E xampl e 72G
- 11222. The number 72 indicates that this is a
VTA-1072 engine assembly. The engine serial
number of a VTA- 1073 engine assembly
manufactured in the same sequence would read 73G
- (5 digit number). It can, therefore, be seen
that the letter indicate s the sequence and the
two digit number in the prefix indicate s the
type of engine. Because of the fact engines are
manufactured at Rock Island for other machines
such as combine s and because of the need for
replacement assemblies as repair items, there is
no definite relation between en gine s erial
number and tractor serial number.
F ig. D-2. Engine Serial Number
ig. D t. Tractor Seriol i/umber
If the parts to be ordered are engine parts, give
the serial number of the engine, which is
Stamped in the right hand side of the block.
When ordering parts, always give the tractor
serial number. This is found on the name plate
on the in strument panel.

18GROUP II, ENGINE SECTION B, USING A TORQUE WRENCH
9/ he n a nut is tightened on a bolt or stud, a
clamping action is set up between t he nut and
the c omponent parts Actually as the nut is
tightened, the bolt or stud is stretc hed or
elongated slightly This stretching action of the
bolt or stud maintains the clamping force on the
component parts be ing held together
In order to properly control t his stretch and
not build up e xce s sive pressures, (which can
s nap a bolt in two) the torque wrench should be
used However in order to obtain fairly accurate
torque wrench tig htnes s several
factors must be understood Failure to consider
the following c onditions will prevent an ac-
c urate torque wre rich reading
SOGKET WRENCH
- Be sure to lubricate the threads of the bolt
before the nut is installed - Use the exact type of washer, under the nut, thac
is called for in the serv ice manual - Be sure to pull the torque wrench handle with a
steady even pull, exerted at eight angles to the
wrench handle, when the dial is being read (DO
NOT USE AN EXTENSION ON THE HANDLE IT WILL
CAUSE THE DIAL READING TO BE INACCURATE ) - Your torque wrench dial will register in foot
pounds of torque tightness Be sure to u se the
recom- mended torque tightness shown in this
manual, for each specific assembly procedure - TORQUE \RENCH RECOMMENDATIONS
