This publication contains both the U.S. customary
units of measurement and the SI Metric equ i-
valents. Right-hand and left-hand sides of
the stack wagon are determined by facing in the
direction the stack wagon will travel when in
use. The warranty appears on your copy of the
pur- chase order which you should have received
from your dealer. Record your stack wagon
serial number in the space provided on page 52.

has been delivered ready for field use and the
customer has been fully informed as to the
proper care and operation of same.

• All grease fittings have been lubricated, gear
  case oil level checked, and parts requiring spray
  lubricant or oil lubricated. See page 19 thru 22.

certain the proper operating adjustments for all
crop (or field con- ditions) are understood. If
possible, operate the stack wagon to see that it
is functioning properly. Tell the customer of any
attachment which will help do a better job.

Safety
Operate Safely DO NOT operate stack wagon
without reading this operator's manual. DO NOT
allow another person on the tracto r or stack
wagon when operating. DO NOT start tracto r
enginé with gears or levers engaged. Block rear
or loaded stack wagon when unhitching 1rom
tractor. Make sure tractor has the co rrect
front end ballast, see tractor operator s
manual. Avoid contact with moving parts. Keep
hands, feet, clothing away from moving parts. If
tractor is equipped with ROLL GARD1 Safety Cab,
fasten seat belts. Protect Against
Noise Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause
im- pairment or loss of hearing. Wear a su itable
hearing. protective device such as earmuffs (A)
or earplugs (B) to protect against objectionable
or uncomfortable loud noises. A - Earmuffs B -
Earplugs Avoid Fires DO NOT operate the stack
wagon without a fire extinguisher nearby. DO NOT
refuel the tractor with eng ine running . DO NOT
smoke or use a lantern when refueling tractor. DO
NOT operate stack wagon in rocky ground if crop
is extremely dry.

• Transport Safely
• KNOW the transport height of your wagon.
• Move safety lock pin (A) to transport positi on.
  Move hitch jack to transport position.
• Keep reflectors (B) SMV em blem (C) clean.
• Do not transport the stack wagon with the can-
  opy raised. Always raise the pickup.
• When transporting the stack wagon on a road or
  hig hway at night or during t he day, use
  necessary Ii g hts and devic es f or ad equ ate
  warn in g t o operators ot other vehicles. In
  this regard, check local governmental
  regulations. Various safety lights and devices
  are available from your Joh n Deere dealer.
• Shift the tractor into a lower gear when
  transport- ing down slopes or grades.
• Practice Safe Maintenance
• Stop the engine and be sure the PTO has stop ped
  before servicing or
• Connect ing or disconnecting a PTO shaft
• Making any adjustment to PTO drive train or
  hitch
• Cleaning out PTO driven equipment.
• PTO master shield should be in place at all times
  except when connecting a PTO drive line or tor
  special applications as directed in the
  operator's manuaL
• The PTO shaft guard should be in place when the
  PTO is not being used and replace any other
  guards or shields removed.
• When mou nting a tire on a wheel or rim, failure
  to foIIow p ro per proc ed u res can p ro du ce
  an ex- plosion which can result in serious injury
  or death. Do not attempt to mount a tire unless
  you have the proper equipment and experience to
  perform the job. Have it done by your John Deere
  dealer or a qualified tire repair service.
• W hen working under stack wagon, securely block
  the wheels.
• Escaping fluid under pressure can have sufficient
  force to penetrate the skin, causing serious per-
  sonal injury. Before disconnecting lines, be sure
  to relieve all pressure. Before applying pressure
  to the system, be sure all connections are tight
  and that lines, pipes and hoses are not damaged.
• FIuid escaping from a very small hole can be al-
  most invisi ble. Use a piece of cardboard or
  wood, rather than hands, to search for suspected
  leaks.
• If injured by escaping tluid, see a doctor at
  once. Serious infection or reactio n can develop
  if proper medical treatment is not administered
  immediately.

Preparing the Tractor
1. Remove PTO guard and store it on the guard
retainer. CAUTION Always install PTO guard on
the PTO shaft when PTO is not being
used. IMPORTANT The stack wagon is equipped with
a 1000 rpm PTO. A 540 rpm PTO attadhment is
available.
2. Position drawbar properly. IMPORTANT If
offset drawbar is used, offset should always
be down and clevis removed, if installed.

3. Lock drawbar in place with locking
pins. IMPORTANT On 2840, 4030, 4230, 4430,
and 4040 tractors (and all other tractors over 80
HP), the drawbar locking pins MUST BE replaced
with cap screws. Tighten screws securely.

NOTE A drawbar support attachment (bold ar- row)
is available for 3020 through 4430 and 4040
tractors to increase stability on rough ground.

4. Turn the metering valves to the "rabbit or
fast position.
5. Install sufficient front end ballast to
stabilize tractor when operating over rough
terrain. See your tractor operator's manual.

• Assem ble the required pickup lift mechanism.
  Install two 220-inch (5 590 mm) hoses to the one
  single or double acting 8-inch (203 mm) stroke
  cylinder. See your tractor operator's manual
  fo r proper assembly of hoses to tractor
  hydraulic cylinder.
• NOTE Tractor hydraU/ic oil flow MUST BE a I
  least 12 gpm (45.6 L) to obtain a minimum com-
  pression time of 15 seconds.
• Secure lift links and center link so they do not
  come in contact with hoses or tires. See your
  tracto r operator's manual.
• (SOUND-GARD Body or Cab ONLY) Drill a 7/8- inch
  hole in panel (A) near the top right-hand corner
  as indicated. Insert rope guide (B) from the
  rear of the panel. Install retaining ring on
  guide to hold it in place. Reassemble panel to
  SOUND-GARD body (or cab)

1. Install pickup lift cylinder. IMPORTANT Move
lock pin (bold arrow) from transport to field
position before actuating llft cylinder.

2. Attac h hoses to right-hand side of pickup
with hose c lamps (A) and strap them to the cross
tube with clamps (B) at two places.
3. PulI pickup Iift cylinder hoses (C) through
grom - met (D) in cross drive shield. Attac h to
hose (E) with compression cylinder hoses. Allow
suffi- cient slack in hoses for vertical movement
at the pickup. Avoid loops which mig ht catch on
crops.

clamp 4. Unlock door by removing spring locking
pin and sliding safety lock pin away from the
wagon. Install the spring locking pin in the
inner hole.

• ATTACHING
• Install rubber hitch shield on drawbar.
• Back tractor to align holes, then install hitch
  pin and both nuts.

3. Attach PTO POWR-GARD T Hook up. CAUTION
Follow safe PTO hookup pro- d cedure outlined
below Shut off tractor engine. Move collar (B)
back against stop on yoke. Push button (C) and
turn collar (B) until button locks in
position. Turn collar (B) or tractor PTO (A) to
align splines.
Push bell (D) forward firmly until button snaps
OUt. Pull rearward on bell (D) to be sure
power-shaft is latched. DO NOT pull on collar as
this will re- lease latch. Replace any tractor
PTO shielding which was re- moved to attach PTO
Powr-Gard Hookup.

• Plug and loc k the pic kup lift cylind er hoses
  into the left-hand tracto r outlet.
• Plug and lock the compression cylinder hoses
  into the right-hand tracto r outlet.
• IMPORTANT Install hoses. Notched hose into
  notched receptacle. See your tractor
  operator's manual for further information on
  hydraulic cylinder operation.
• Thread trip rope through hose support then
  through the rooe guide in the cab (if required)
  or secure it at a convenient location near the
  operato r. Allow sufficient slack for turning.
• Lcwer jack stand, remove lock pin, and install
  stand in the field or transport position.

• Remote Cylinder Control Levers
• Push lever (A) forward to lower the pickup lift.
  Pull lever back to raise the pickup lift.
• Push lever (B) forward to lower the canopy. Pull
  the lever back to raise the cano py.
• Pull and hold lever (B) rearward to open rear
  door and to engage the unload ing mechanism
  when trip rope is pulled.

• DETACHING
• Remove the jack stand from storage position and
  pin in vertical position. Raise the stand to
  remove load from tractor drawbar.
• Lower canopy and close the door.
• CAUTION Escaping hydraulic fluid can be
  dangerous. See page 3.
• Uncouple hydraulic hoses from tractor. Install
  dust covers on hose ends and dust plugs in
  breakaway couplers.
• Remove control rope from tractor. Coil and store
• rope on stack wagon.
• Detach PTO POWR-GARD T Hoo kup.
• CAUTION Follow safe PTO detaching pro- d cedure
  outlined below

Shut off tractor engine. Support bell (D) with
one hand. Pull collar (B) back with other hand.
Button (C) need NOT be held down. Replace any
tractor PTO shielding which was re- moved to
detach PTO Powr-Gard Hookup. Remove hitch pin,
pull tractor forward. Rem ove hitch guard from
tractor drawbar. Store hitch pin and guard with
stack wagon. If desired, the remote hydraulic
cylinder used for the pickup lift can be removed
for other uses. CAUTION Install lock pin in
safety posi-

Transporting

• CAUTION When transporting the stack wagon on a
  road or highway at night or during the day, use
  accessory lights and devices for adquate warning
  to operators of other vehicles. In this regard,
  check your local governmental regulations.
  Various lights and safety devices are
  available from your John Deere dealer.
• KNOW the transport height and width of your
  stack wagon and BEWARE of over head wires.
• Lower canopy (A) fully and RAISE pickup (B)
• fully.
• Place hitch jack (C) in transport position.

• Be sure safety lock pin (D) is in transport posi-
  tion.
• Keep SMV emblem and reflectors clean when
  transporting.
• DO NOT exceed 20 mph (32 km/h) with an empty
  stack wagon.
• Always use lower gear on down grades.
• Tractor must have safe and adequate braking
  capacity.
• DO NOT allow anyone to ride on stack wagon.
• NOTE Tandem wheels increase width to 13 feet 4
  inches (4 064 mm).
