  • Freezing Eggs vs. Freezing Embryos The Pros and
    Cons

2
  • Egg Freezing
  • Egg freezing, also known as oocyte
cryopreservation, is a process in which a woman's
eggs are retrieved from her ovaries, frozen, and
stored for later use. When a woman is ready to
get pregnant, the frozen eggs can be thawed and
fertilized with sperm, and the resulting embryos
can be implanted in her uterus.
  • Egg Freezing Process
  • Hormone injections to stimulate ovaries for 8-10
    days.
  • Egg extraction through transvaginal ultrasound
    aspiration (15-20 minutes).
  • Freezing methods slow freezing (gradual
    temperature reduction) and vitrification (rapid
    freezing).

3
  • Embryo Freezing
  • Embryo freezing is a process in which fertilized
eggs, known as embryos, are frozen and stored for
later use. Embryo freezing can be done with IVF
embryos, which are created in a laboratory, or
with embryos that were created naturally and then
    frozen.
  • Embryo Freezing Process
  • Similar to egg freezing but involves exposing
    eggs to sperm for fertilization.
  • Fertilized eggs develop into embryos, which are
frozen using slow freezing or vitrification.
  • Storage in liquid nitrogen for future use.

4
  • Advantages of Freezing Eggs
  • Can be done at any age
  • Does not require a partner
  • Offers more flexibility for future family
    planning
  • Independent fertility preservation without
    fertilization.
  • Potential ethical considerations are less
    complex.
  • Can be used to protect fertility in women with
    medical conditions
  • Increases chances of a successful pregnancy

5
  • Disadvantages of Freezing Eggs
  • Lower success rate than embryo freezing
  • The cost of egg freezing can range from several
thousand dollars to tens of thousands, depending
on the clinic, number of eggs frozen, and storage
    duration.
  • The success rate of egg freezing is not
guaranteed, as not all frozen eggs survive the
    freezing and thawing process

6
  • Advantages of Freezing Embryos
  • Higher success rate than egg freezing
  • Can be done with IVF embryos or naturally created
    embryos
  • Allows for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT)
  • Reduces the Need for Multiple Egg Retrievals
  • Reduced risk of multiple births
  • Flexibility in family planning
  • Preservation of fertility

7
  • Disadvantages of Freezing Embryos
  • Requires a partner
  • More expensive than egg freezing
  • Not all embryos will survive the freezing and
    thawing process
  • Damage to embryos during freezing and thawing
  • Embryo freezing is a relatively expensive
    procedure

8
  • Success Rates
  • Frozen embryos
  • The survival rate of frozen embryos is about 95.
  • The live birth rate per embryo transferred is
    about 50.
  • The overall live birth rate per embryo freezing
    cycle is about 60.
  • Frozen eggs
  • The survival rate of frozen eggs is about 90.
  • The live birth rate per egg thawed is about 25.
  • The overall live birth rate per egg freezing
    cycle is about 40.
