3 facts about Klebsiella pneumoniae

What is Klebsiella pneumoniae?
  • The gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively
    anaerobic bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae (K.
pneumoniae) is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae
    family.
  • On MacConkey agar, it is one of the bacteria that
exhibits lactose fermentation and forms pink
    colonies.
  • When this bacteria is present in the human
digestive system, it normally does no harm. It
can, however, lead to a number of serious and
fatal illnesses if it spreads to other parts of
    the body.

3 facts about Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • In recognition of German-Swiss bacteriologist
Edwin Klebs' contributions to the study of
infectious diseases, V. Trevisan named the
    Klebsiella genus in his honour.
  • The main causes of floating infections in humans
    are Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca,
    and Klebsiella granulomatis.
  • Currently, Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC) strains
that produce carbapenemase are emerging as the
    majority of drug-resistant variations and
    exhibiting severe morbidity and mortality.
