First Aid and CPR Techniques for Choking
Choking can be a life-threatening medical
emergency if appropriate action is not taken on
time. And to take the right action one needs to
have a valid CPR AED First Aid Certification. As
far as first aid for a choking person is
concerned there can be two cases i.e. unconscious
patient and conscious patient.
First Aid for Unconscious Choking Person If
someone gets choked and becomes unconscious, then
one needs to perform CPR to save their life.
First Aid for Conscious Choking Person If a
person gets choked while being conscious but is
unable to speak or cough, then the Heimlich
Maneuver method needs to be used. Heimlich
Maneuver is a system of abdominal thrusts that
helps in clearing the throat.

Causes of Choking
Choking can be caused due to improper chewing of
food or any other object that gets stuck in the
upper airway. Additionally, if a person consumes
alcohol, takes drugs, or has illnesses such as
Parkinsons disease their standard swallowing
mechanisms get slowed down which can ultimately
result in choking as well.
In case of children, choking is usually caused
due to incomplete chewing of food and attempts to
eat large pieces of food. Choking may also be
caused because of eating hard candy. Moreover,
young kids put small objects in their mouths
which might choke their throats.
Symptoms of Choking
  • Difficulty in Speaking
  • Breathing Trouble
  • Signs of Distress like grasping the neck or
    pointing to the throat
  • Difficulty in Breathing
  • Congested Face that turns gray-blue color
  • Nails, lips and skin getting bluish or dusky
  • Noisy Breathing
  • Loss of Consciousness

Guidelines by the American Heart Association
(AHA) to Prevent Choking
  • Stay away from placing small foreign objects
like pins in your mouth for swift access.
  • Make sure to take small bites and chew food
    thoroughly while eating.
  • Avoid giving your young kids hard foods or small
food pieces like popcorn, grapes, nuts etc.
  • Make sure to cut the foods like sausages,
hotdogs and meat chunks into small pieces before
serving to the young kids. Do not forget to
supervise them while they are having solid food.
  • While your kids are playing keep an eye over
toys that the kid might get tempted to place in
    their mouth.
  • Try to avoid alcohol consumption as it might
affect your chewing and swallowing ability
    increasing the risk of choking.
