Childhood obesity is when the child weighs more
than what his age should normally
weigh. Childhood obesity has long term and
immediate health outcomes. Parents think it is
fine as long as the children are eating and
enjoying themselves. However, this excessive and
unhealthy eating could lead to some serious
health issues. Obesity is not just the gain of
fats and weight in a childs body. Along with it
comes many other health issues and diseases. Some
of the health issues are
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Liver diseases
  • Bone and joint problems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Early puberty and menstruation
  • Fatigue
  • Overweight
  • Skin infections
  • Anorexia or bulimia
  • Psychological problems and difficulties coping
    with peers.

The children suffering from obesity often suffer
from different psychological problems as well
because of the bullying they get from their
peers. They lose their confidence and
self-esteem due to their size. They suffer from
depression, stress and anxiety which only adds
more trouble to their problems. Keeping a check
on your child and keeping them away from getting
obese has now become very important. Obesity and
hip diseases Research and findings have found
that children who had obesity during their
childhood are more likely to grow and have
problems in their hips during their adolescence.
They are likely to develop a debilitating hip
disease called Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis
(SCFE).

In this type of disease, the hip is deformed and
sometimes completely collapsed. This causes
immense pain and a lifelong disability. This hip
disease is found mainly among teenagers who had
suffered obesity in their childhood and affects
at least 1 out of 2000 children. This disease
and its effect can be minimized only with early
recognition and treatment of obesity. Not letting
the obesity grow bigger is what will save the
patient from getting this disease. Experts
believe that this disease is the most common
factor or reason that leads to hip replacement
surgery in India. The surgeons say that childhood
obesity has a major role in the development of
this hip disorder.

When a child or a teenager suffers with SCFE,
there is no other way but to get his or her hip
replaced as the disorder tends to only get worse
with time. The cost of hip replacement surgery in
Mumbai is around ?47,00 to ?6,85,000. And the
success rate of the surgery is 90-95. The
patient tends to live a better life free from the
hip disorder for a long period of time. Final
