Testing Procedures for UN Rated Bulk Bags
  • All bulk bags, also known as FIBC, jumbo bags, or
super sacks, undergo rigorous performance tests.
However, UN approved bulk bags are of superlative
standards that survive the physical pressure of
loaded contents, which are often hazardous in
    nature.
  • In this blog, we will take a closer look at how
these jumbo bags can meet UN safety guidelines to
    ensure secure usage and handling

What Are UN Rated Bulk Bags?
  • The agrarian, construction and chemical
industries often need to handle chemicals and
flammable or toxic products. UN certified bulk
bags are heavy-duty packaging bags that help
these businesses safely store and transport
    hazardous materials.
  • It is to minimize risks of freak accidents during
storage or transportation of such products that
these bags must meet UNs special testing
    standards.
  • Fine powders like salt, sugar, and flour, that
risk damage from moisture, find appropriate
packaging solutions in bags with liner or with
    lamination.

Testing Procedures That UN Rated Bulk Bags Must
Go Through
  • - The following are some testing procedures that
all big bags must take to be certified as UN FIBC
    bags.
  • Top Lift Test
  • A hydraulic cylinder is used to press down the
contents in the bag that is tested. The top lift
is used to test if the FIBC bag can withstand six
times its level of safe working load for five
full minutes to qualify for a UN rating.

6
  • Stacking Test
  • In this procedure, the bag is placed on a flat
surface and is filled with contents to safe
working load. Pressure, which is equivalent to
two similar bags, is then applied to the bulk bag
to check if it withstands the stress over the
    next 24 hours
  • Drop Test
  • The FIBC bag is filled to a safe working load
level and then dropped from a specified height
that will depend on the testing requirements of
the packing group. To qualify the test for UN
approval, the bag should not tear midway, nor
should there be any leakage of contents.

7
  • Topple Test
  • The tested bag is filled to a safe loading level
on a platform. The platform is then gradually
raised in a way that the bag is forced to tumble
down without letting its contents escape.
  • This is to test if the sack can resist a 100 mm
long knife cut when it is loaded to safe
capacities. The tear cannot widen beyond 25 and
    cause the contents to overflow.
  • The bulk bag is put on a vibrating platform for
one hour to check if it stays intact without
toppling over, or causing any breakage.
  • Tear Test
  • Vibration Test

8
  • Righting Test
  • The jumbo sack is filled to its safe loading
capacity and then knocked on its side. It is
righted into position to see there is no damage
or tear to the bag or its contents.
  • If you want UN approval for your FIBC bags to
store and carry potentially dangerous industry
materials, Umasree is a UN certified bags
manufacturer in India that you can trust. Contact
