Title: A Brief History On District Cooling Technology

1
A Brief History On District Cooling Technology
2
  • The DCS involves using a single outside source to
fulfil the heating and cooling requirements of
small systems and entire cities. Here are some of
    its advantages
  • Safe and reliable
  • Reduced emissions
  • Greater fuel flexibility- allows for the usage of
alternative fuels like biomass or waste

3
  • Today, let us take a closer look at the history
of the district cooling energy systems.
  • Roman hypocausts are the earliest examples of
    these systems.
  • In this, a type of hot-air furnace was used for
    heating buildings nearby.
  • For eg the three temples at Carnuntum(Vienna).

  • By the year 1322, the city fathers of Chaudes
Aigues- a small town in southern France, started
levying taxes on houses which used the heat from
natural hot springs channelled through open
    trenches dug in the rock.
  • The district heating system introduced in London
in 1622 by Dutch polymath Cornelius Drebbel was
supposedly inspired by the system in France.

6
  • Bonnemain, a french engineer used hot water to
heat many big residences and in 1785, this system
was adapted to provide heating to 3 large
    buildings in St Petersburg.
  • In 1877, the first commercial system created by
Birdsill Holy made its appearance in New York.
  • Denvers Colorado Automatic Refrigerator company
introduced the first district cooling system in
    late 1889.
  • Middle East district cooling systems existed as
early as 1960s. Central chilled water plants
were used in the old Beirut airport and the
    American University of Beirut.

7
  • Cut chase to the present, the district cooling
market is expected to grow to USD 47.64 billion
    in 2028.
  • The GCC region is projected to be the major
market for district cooling systems due to its
    hot climate.
  • The sustainable and eco-friendly working
principles of the district cooling system give it
a distinct advantage over traditional methods of
    cooling.
  • Thus by 2030, Dubai city aims to complete 40 of
its cooling requirements with the help of DCS.
