INTRODUCTION
To protect your home from water damage, you must
do a lot of research and be legally responsible
for doing everything in your power to ensure that
your home is well-maintained. One of the most
common property damages caused by water is called
"water damage." Most homeowners file insurance
claims for this type of damage about once a year,
according to estimates by the Insurance
Information Institute. To protect yourself
against this kind of water damage, it's important
to know what causes it
3
WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES OF WATER?
The IICRC has divided water into three
categories, depending on the range of
contamination. They pertain to the source of the
water and its quality after it has gone through
your property. Category I Sanitary Clean
Water Category II Significantly Contaminated
Grey Water Category III Grossly Contaminated
Black Water
4
CATEGORY I SANITARY CLEAN WATER
Water is classified into several categories. The
first category, called Type I water, is the
cleanest type of water. It is distilled water,
and it has a pH level of 7 or less. Once this
water is added to a swimming pool, the property
will stay constant for at least six hours.
5
CATEGORY II SIGNIFICANTLY CONTAMINATED GREY WATER
Category II water is defined by the IICRC as a
type of water with a pH from 7.1 to 8.5. It is
considered "grey water," which means that it has
some contaminants. This type of water includes
wastewater, diluted sewage, and wastewater that
has never been treated. But because this water
has only a shallow level of contaminants, it is
easier to clean up than Category I water, which
requires careful treatment before being used in
any way.
6
CATEGORY III GROSSLY CONTAMINATED BLACK WATER
Blackwater is the most contaminated water of the
three. The IICRC defines it as water containing
persistent or non-volatile contaminants. The
IICRC states that the pH level of alkaline or
hard water should be 8.6 or higher. The
recommended temperature for treating sewage water
is 60 degrees, but some systems can reach 68
degrees. Since sewage water is not safe to drink,
you should not use it for irrigation purposes.
Even animals could suffer adverse effects if they
ingest the bacteria in this type of water.
7
CATEGORY DETERIORATION
Water can change over time, becoming corrosive or
polluted. To prevent damage to your home, it's
important to know the type of water you have, so
you can take steps to protect your house and
pipes. If your water is classified as sanitary,
you don't need to worry about corrosion however,
if your water is already showing signs of
deterioration, it might leave residue in your
pipes. This residue could corrode your pipes,
causing damage to your home.
