Rates of eating disorders have skyrocketed and
hospital admissions for eating disorders have
doubled since before the pandemic. Between the
isolation of the pandemic, mental health
struggles, and more social media
exposure, adolescents are particularly vulnerable
for developing eating disorder symptoms. In 2021
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and
American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry
(AACAP) declared a national emergency in child
and adolescent mental health.
3Eating disorders are the second deadliest mental
illness with a mortality rate of 4-5 percent. The
good news, however eating disorders are very
treatable with early detection and proper
treatment. Unfortunately, most medical schools
and residency programs dont provide adequate
education on eating disorders. With that said,
pediatricians and primary care providers can
learn vital basics to help better care for
patients with eating disorders. The below
