What have NGOs been doing to help with the food
crisis triggered by the pandemic?
February 10, 2022 When the pandemic started in
2020, I was under the misconception that this was
just a health crisis. The reality, however, is
completely different. The spread of the
coronavirus triggered a major humanitarian crisis
across the nation, as people from different
communities lost their jobs and along with that,
access to necessities such as food and
healthcare. As I read further, I realized that
the deep- rooted issues of hunger and
malnourishment had gotten significantly worse due
to the pandemic. Migrant and daily wage workers,
families residing in slum areas, and individuals
staying at old age homes or orphanages suffered
as they went to sleep on an empty stomach every
day. These facts disturbed me, and I wanted to do
my bit to help these people in need. After doing
thorough research, I found out that numerous
social organizations have been extending a
strong hand of support to these vulnerable
communities during these grim times. Food NGOs
in India have been working on the ground to help
restore the level of nourishment these
individuals need at a time when keeping health
in good shape has become critical. These
organizations have been helping to solve the
food crisis in two main ways 1.Distribution of
cooked meals Food NGOs have been providing warm,
fully cooked meals to communities in need. I
read that these meals contain enough nourishment
so that individuals can go about their day
without feeling weak or lethargic.

2.Distribution of ration packets NGOs have also
been distributing ration packets to ensure
sustenance amongst these vulnerable communities.
Packets usually contain daily cooking essentials
including rice, pulses, grains, bread, sugar,
and biscuits so that families can prepare meals
themselves. I also observed that these NGOs were
giving utmost priority to the maintenance of
safety and hygiene standards. While I was going
through a few images I noticed that all the
volunteers were wearing gloves and masks, and the
meals were packed properly to prevent any
contamination. An NGO representative I spoke to
also told me that all staff members and
volunteers are also monitored for symptoms, and
hygiene is maintained in kitchen areas through
frequent sanitization and cleaning as well. As
new variants of coronavirus continue to emerge,
it is becoming increasingly important for all of
us to show solidarity while fighting this health
