What is it like to work at a food NGO in
India?
My mother used to volunteer at a nearby NGO and
helped with the distribution of foods and
medicines on the weekends in the slum areas.
Since then, as a 12-year-old, I made the
decision to continue doing my bit to help out
society in any way I can. As a student volunteer,
I have been involved in many community outreach
programs and volunteered at different NGOs since
my childhood. As I interact more and more with
people from underprivileged communities, it
motivates me further and it is my goal to one
day start an NGO of my own. However, as I am
still studying, I believe it is in my best
interest to volunteer at different NGOs. Through
this, I hope to fully understand how these
organizations function and the key points of
focus that make an NGO successful. Following
through with this plan, I have been volunteering
at a top food NGO in India for the past nine
months.
The work they do here is amazing, and I genuinely
enjoy spending my time as I am gaining hands-on
experience and learning so much. Like many other
food NGOs in the country, they focus on
providing mid-day meals to young children who
attend government-aided schools in the area. All
my team members are extremely passionate about
the cause of making India hunger-free, and we all
work hard to achieve the tasks assigned to
us. Two weeks ago, I even went along with a few
volunteers to the nearby school where we
distributed the meals and interacted with the
children. They were so happy to see
2
us, and I saw their faces light up as we were
serving the food during lunchtime. I felt very
grateful to be part of this very important
cause. From my very first day, I noticed the NGO
is very organized. All the teams are given clear
instructions on what to do. The high-tech
kitchens are sanitized every few hours to
maintain hygiene standards. There are also charts
displayed indicating the amount of protein,
carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals that need
to be included in every meal, according to
government regulations. A fellow volunteer also
showed me the timetable they followed for the
different meals prepared each day of the week,
and the schedules that needed to be followed for
delivery of the meals to the specified schools.
Overall, the whole process is running with great
efficiency to provide the best quality meals to
children.
