Title: Types Of Fiber Optic Connectors

1
Fiber Optic Connectors
2
Introduction
  • In any enterprise or professional internet
network, data speed and reliability is of top
    priority.
  • Hence, most are shifting to Pre terminated fiber
optic cable networks as they are unfazed by
electromagnetic interference and you get superior
bandwidth ( gt10Gbps) with data transfer at the
    speed of light.
  • Yet, when choosing a fiber optic you have a
plethora of option to choose from.
  • For long distance gt 500mtrs, you have single mode
    fibers
  • For short distance lt500mtrs, you have multimode
    fibers
  • Similarly, you have a wide choice when it comes
    to fiber connectors.

3
SC Connectors
  • Acronym for subscriber connector
  • SC was developed by NTT in Japan for fiber optic
    communications.
  • Snap-in type connector
  • Implements a push-pull mechanism for quick
    insertion and removal
  • Two SC connectors are bound together with a
plastic clip to create a duplex connection
  • Used for 2.5mm ferrule

4
ST Connector
  • Acronym for Straight Tip
  • Was developed by ATT
  • Implements a twist on/off connection mechanism
  • It is generally deployed alone
  • It is also used in a 2.5mm ferrule

5
LC Connectors
  • Developed by Lucent Technologies, hence the
    acronym LC (i.e., Lucent Connector)
  • Is a small form factor connector
  • Deployed in pairs
  • It utilizes a retaining tab mechanism for staying
    in place
  • Used in a 1.25mm ferrule
  • Useful in single-mode communications
  • Available as Pre terminated fiber

6
MTRJ Connectors
  • Acronym for Mechanical Transfer-Registered Jack
    connectors
  • Developed by AMP/Tyco and Corning
  • Greatly resembles the RJ45 connectors
  • Houses two cables in a single connector. So used
    for duplex communications.
  • It is available in two variants.
  • With the mating pins
  • Without the mating pins
  • Applicable for single or multimode communications

7
MTP/MPO Connectors
  • MPO stands for Multi-Fiber Push-on type of
    connector
  • It was developed by NTT in the early 90s
  • MTP stands for Multi-Fiber Termination Push-on
    type of connector
  • It is used for terminating multi-fiber
    connections in an indoor environment
  • The MTP connectors are engineered for high
    mechanical and optical specs
  • Connected using a push-pull mechanism
  • The male connectors have pins, and the female
connector has pits to guide the ferrule correctly

8
MU Connectors
  • Acronym for Multitermination Unibody Connector
  • It is is a miniature version of the SC connector
  • It is a connector type developed by the NTT and
    used in Japan only
  • Used for a ferrule size of 1.25mm
  • Implements a push-pull mechanism for quick
    insertion and removal
