1. History of Cats Eye
Translucent yellowish chatoyant chrysoberyl is
called cymophane or cats eye. It is the unique
ability to reflect light in a way that resembles
the slit eye of a cat, hence the name 'cat's
eye'.It is considered the 'original' cat's eye
gem, and is in fact the only gem that can be
traded as simply 'cat's eye' all other
varieties must be traded using very specific
names, such as 'cat's eye quartz' or 'cat's eye
apatite'. The chrysoberyl species was first
discovered in 1789.
4
For many years, it was referred to as simply
'chrysolite', but today, the term is no longer
commonly used. Cats eye became popular at the
end of the 19th century when it was given as an
engagement token by the Duke of Connaught. This
greatly increased its value as a gemstone. The
increased demand, in turn, created an
intensified search for it in Ceylon.
5
The cat's eye gemstone is a quite fascinating
gemstone. The cat-eye stone retains the maximum
amount or quantity of light being reflected by
stunning planet Ketu. Therefore, because of the
above fact, this stone has been termed as the
birthstone of Ketu.
