How COVID-19 presents in Children and teens!
COVID-19 the virus has gone through a lot of
mutations and has been able to keep itself
thriving and surviving all efforts of man to kill
it. It has survived all the efforts of man to
eradicate it and stop its onslaught. At the
onset, it was a notion that the virus only
affected adults, that too, those who have lesser
immunity to fight off the virus. It was also
believed that the virus did not seem effective
against the younger generation due to their
stronger immune system and lesser age-related
comorbidity. The virus seems to affect the
respiratory system of people with the lower
immune system due to age factors or due to some
underlying medical conditions that affected their
self-defense against such viruses. The virus has
proved to be growing stronger and the newer
variants have infected the body with more subtle
symptoms that are not related to the respiratory
system. The virus has also become more lethal and
has increased the mortality rate of the humans
being affected. Its incubation periods have also
increased and the ways that you can get infected
also has become more generic. It is not affected
by extreme cold or heat and it is affecting the
globe equally. The fact that it has started
affecting children and teenagers too is more
concerning, now.
3
Like asymptomatic adults with the COVID virus,
even asymptomatic children are bound to spread
COVID to others. Most of the children with
COVID-19 have mild to no symptoms at all. The
children with severe symptoms may require
hospitalization for intensive care or a
ventilator to help them breathe. Fatality is
rare. There are some rare but serious medical
conditions also evolving that are associated with
the COVID-19 virus in children called Multisystem
Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C). Not much data is
available on this kind of infection.
Infants below 1 year and children with underlying
conditions may also be affected severely by the
COVID-19 virus. Infants under the age of one are
more likely to be infected severely even if they
do not have any underlying condition that would
make them more susceptible to COVID-19. Children
with below given underlying conditions are more
prone to COVID-19 infection
4
  • Asthma or chronic lung disease
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Heart disease
  • Immunosuppression
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple chronic conditions
  • Obesity
  • This might not be a comprehensive list of all
underlying conditions likely to be affected or
prone to the COVID-19 virus but this list is the
most common conditions that are likely to succumb
    to the COVID-19 virus.
  • The symptoms of COVID-19 are very similar to the
symptoms presented in an adult like fever, cough,
nasal congestion, loss of smell and taste, sore
    throat, breathlessness, diarrhea, nausea,
stomachache, headache, poor appetite and body
pain. The symptoms are also very common to other
common diseases like common cold, cough and other
    allergies.

5
If you see any of these symptoms in your child or
teenager, get in touch with your family medical
consultant and monitor the childs fever,
development of sore throat, uncontrolled cough,
breathing difficulty or any other such symptoms
developing and being persistent in the child for
long.
6
Prevention is better than cure, which stands very
highly emphasized in the case of COVID-19. Keep
your children away from public places, keep the
hygienic environment in the house and keep your
house disinfected by following general rules of
hygiene like using sanitizer and regularly
washing hands. Inculcate these habits into your
children too to keep them protected against any
kind of infection, not only COVID-19. Get tested
if you think the symptoms have gone severe and
take the advice of your medical consultant.
