Over the last few decades, it was evident that
women were being more prone to these ACL injuries
than men, especially among the athletes. However,
according to a recent study, this increased risk
is not just limited to ACL tears but for almost
all types of knee problems caused by
osteoarthritis  knee pain, ache, stiffness and
increased likelihood of injuries too. According
to this research, women are 40 more likely to
develop knee osteoarthritis than men. And for
among women of age in the age group 50-60 years
this risk takes a significant jump, to the tune
of 350.

Yes, elder women are 350 more prone to suffer
from osteoarthritis than men of the same age. The
research also suggests that the severity of
the osteoarthritis suffered by women is higher
than that of men too. In this blog here we delve
into reasons for this phenomenon and give you
quick tips to reduce the risk of arthritis for
women, so read on Why are women more prone to
knee problems than men? Women are differently
built as compared to men and this change in
anatomy does contribute to the increased risk of
knee and hip problems. To keep it short, here are
two major reasons that make women more prone
to knee arthritis and other knee problems

The difference in biomechanics and
musculoskeletal system The shape and size of the
female knee bones i.e. tibia, femur and patella
are different to that of men, but the difference
predominantly starts at the hip. Women, in
general, have wide pelvis which increases the
angle at which the thigh bone connects to knee
thereby increasing the stress and
instability. These anatomical differences in
women can alter the way women run, walk, or stand
and keeps them at disadvantage at efficiently
countering the ground forces, resulting in more
wear and tear over time. Even for the lower body
mas and compositions, a womans knees tend to
have less cartilage in the knee joint than a man
too. All these factors over time can contribute
to increases risk of osteoarthritis in women as
they age.

Hormonal changes in women While elder women are
more prone to wear and tear of the knee joint due
to anatomical differences, this phase usually
coincides with the menopause making it even
difficult for the knee joint. With oestrogen
levels dropping after menopause, the healing
ability of the knee joint reduces further,
increasing the joint pain and accelerating
arthritis in women. Knee Replacement for
Women While knee arthritis can be managed using
treatment procedures it cannot be completely
cured unless a woman undergoes a knee replacement
surgery by specialist joint replacement
surgeon. While women are predisposed to have knee
problems and are more prone to suffer knee
arthritis, there is a bright side for women who
undergo treatment for knee arthritis.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons, women less likely to suffer
complications and fare way better, heal quicker
and have reduced risk of complications
following joint replacement surgery. While the
success rate of knee and hip replacement surgery
is already on the higher side, this study
confirms that the chances of having a healthy
knee and hip are excellent for women in
particular. If you are a woman suffering from a
severe case of knee arthritis that can only be
treated with knee replacement surgery, then we
advise you to consult an expert joint replacement
surgeon in Mumbai as soon as possible to weigh-in
your options for surgery. Want to consult
