• What is the real idea behind lockdown in the
  context of an epidemic? Lockdown is meant to
  contain the spread of an infectious disease from
  one another and to ensure ones safety. It is
  indeed essential to get prepared with the medical
  resources and to set up a strategy to break the
  chain of infection. Though lockdown is necessary,
  it isnt an effective solution to fight an
  epidemic in India, but only a precautionary
  measure.

• An effective lockdown should be supported by
  other measures like the maintenance of supply of
  essential commodities, medical preparations,
  welfare of migrant workers and their families in
  particular. Failing to meet them would create an
  imbalance like the one we witnessed during the
  initial phase of the current Covid-19 pandemic,
  when nationwide lockdown was experimented to
  control its spread. Migrant workers across India
  faced hardships due to the loss of income and
  food shortage. Huge unemployment urged them to
  come back home despite the lack of proper
  transportation facilities. Denial of medical
  care, starvation, road and rail accidents lead to
  the death of many such migrants. Taking such
  factors into consideration is hence essential for
  the effective functioning of a lockdown.

• The Covid-19 recession has been largely
  disruptive. Developing economies and major
  economies have been significantly downgraded.
  Ever since the dawn of lockdown, people across
  India has been witnessing a rise in unemployment
  making it more difficult to run livelihood.
  According to the Ministry of Statistics, Indias
  growth in the 4th quarter of fiscal year 2020
  went down to 3.1. The country witnessed a
  contraction of about 20 in the manufacturing
  sector and 16.7 in the industrial output as
  measured by the Index of Industrial Production
  (IIP). The Great lockdown has thus resulted in
  the 2020 stock market crash, collapse of tourism
  and hospitality industry, and increase in
  government debt. People all over the world are
  drastically affected by this economic downturn.
