Title: Types of High School Scholarships

1
Types of High School Scholarships
High school scholarships are the most common
scholarships awarded by grade. You can get a high
school scholarship as a freshman, junior, or
senior student. The earlier you start your
application, the better. Most people apply for a
scholarship because they need financial aid to
further their studies. However, different
scholarships offer different kinds of financial
assistance. Some scholarships will only pay for
tuition and exclude living expenses, and some
will fully fund your education. Having a clear
picture of what you are looking for can help
shorten the list. Federal and State
grants Before you start looking into other
education funding opportunities, you should first
consider applying for a Federal or State grant.
Both Federal and State grants are need-based
financial grants. You dont need to come from a
low-income family, but you need to show the need
for financial aid. The final decision is made
after accessing your parents income, assets, and
other resources. Both grants also offer
financial assistance to top students. For
example, if you have a 3.0 GPA and above, you
qualify for both grants. State grants, however,
give priority to students who reside in that
State.

Athletic Scholarships Football and baseball are
not the only sports that offer a scholarship for
high school students. Organizations can award
student-athletes who play golf, softball, soccer,
swimming, gymnastic, run track, and many other
scholarships. Additionally, you dont always have
to continue playing while in college. If you are
an excellent student and do well in sports, you
qualify for an athletic scholarship. It is not
only the NCCA who award athletic scholarships.
Smaller organizations such as the National Junior
College Athletic Association and the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics also
award scholarships to student-athletes. Academi
c and Merit Scholarships If you are a top
performer in a school, then this is for you. Most
academic and merit scholarships will award you
based on your grades, graduation ranking, rand
test scores. Thats not all. Some merit
scholarships look at your performance on specific
subjects. They will check where your interest
lies, or what you have chosen as your primary
and give you the scholarship to study your major.
Competition might be stiff for this one as over
1.5 million applicants enter the National Merit
Scholarships competition. However, some other
companies and organizations offer merit
scholarships such as the Coca-Cola Scholars
Foundation and the Elks National
Foundation. Essay Scholarships Can you write a
strong essay? Do you consider yourself a good
writer? If your answer is yes, then you stand a
chance of getting an essay scholarship. Essay
scholarships range in the amount of money
awarded. You can get as little as 100 to tens of
thousands of dollars. For you to win, some essay
competitions will look at your academic
performance and the essay. Start seeking out
organizations and companies that offer such
scholarships and try your luck. The cost of
university education is growing every year. Not
everyone can afford to work and study throughout
college. High school scholarships are available
for everyone, including minorities. Its just
a matter of finding where you fit and taking your
shot.
