Crisis

Many people are working from the safety of their
homes during the COVID-19 crisis. This change in
work environment poses data security risks for
organizations of all sizes. To help ensure you
and your employees are working securely, we
recommend reviewing the following tips. Tip 1
Secure home networks. You would be surprised by
the number of home network routers that are not
secure. Most providers never change the default
admin password which is either password or no
password. All it takes is a hacker to connect to
the box, which is easy to do using the IP
address, enter in the username admin and have
access to your employees home network. Tip
2 People working from home are more prone to
surf risky sites. Many people tend to visit
riskier sites and click links in emails on their
personal devices. This bad habit carries over
when people are using their work computer at
home too. Remind employees to only visit approved
websites and never click on suspicious
links.p Tip 3 Enable two-factor
authentication for remote employees. Two-factor
authentication can help protect your data because
a hacker will need the second form of
authentication to access your network and
servers. Without it, they are locked out. Tip
4 Require all employees to update their
passwords monthly. It is a good idea to require
monthly password changes. Passwords should
include a combination of upper- and lower-case
letters, numbers, and special characters to be
strong. Tip 5 Store data and files in the
cloud or on your servers. Enable tools and apps
that prevent employees from downloading and
saving files and data on their local work
devices. This way you will have one less security
concern to worry about.

Tip 6 Perform daily backups of your
data. Schedule data backups to run every day to
ensure you always have the latest backup in case
something goes wrong, like the server
crashes. Tip 7 Disable home network name
broadcasting. Most of your employees home Wi-Fi
networks are set to broadcast their names to
make it easier to connect devices. You will want
them to shut this off and hide their network
names to increase security. This is easy to
disable by accessing the home routers settings
and shutting it off. Tip 8 Use a Virtual
Private Network (VPN) to connect remotely. It can
be tempting to just connect via the internet to
work resources, but this is not a good idea. The
internet is not 100 secure all the time, so
there is a good chance your data could be
hacked. Tip 9 Put away work files and other
sensitive information before video
conferences. Make sure employees get in the habit
of not having anything in view of their video
cameras when attending video conferences. The
last thing is you need sensitive information
being shared in a screenshot and employee posted
on social media. By encouraging your employees
to practice these tips, you can improve data
security for your organization. If you or your
employees have any devices that have failed with
data you need off it, Taking It Mobile may be
