Title: DOES CONSTANT USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND HEADPHONES WORSEN YOUR HEARING?

1
DOES CONSTANT USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND HEADPHONES
WORSEN YOUR HEARING?
2
  • Admit this or not, but the sound everyone hears
through technology is louder than ever. In fact,
the louder the sound, the better the experience.
But everything great comes with a side effect.

3
  • As modern technology continues to evolve, more
people are complaining of hearing issues than
    ever before.

4
  • However, it is also surprising that a lot of
people use headphones at a full volume, enjoy
blasting video games, face noise pollution and
traffic, attend excessively loud concerts on a
daily basis and arent struggling to hear.

5
  • So, is the advancing technology really to blame
for the increase in noise-induced hearing issues?

6
Lets understand what makes hearing
worse and take a closer look between noise and
hearing loss.
  • Multiple studies have shown a link between loud
noises and hearing loss. But these days, noise
related hearing issues are self-induced and show
their effects gradually that people fail to
    notice.

7
  • In fact, premature hearing loss in people aged 30
to 50 is often not detected before its too late.
As technology becomes a more integral part of our
lives, the gradual reduction in hearing is only
going to become more apparent over time.

8
  • People obviously want to know what all this fuss
is about and just how far they can push the
    limits.
  • The truth is headphones are more common than ever
and can cause a lot of damage to the ears, which
    sometimes leads to noise-induced, sensorineural
    hearing loss over time.

9
  • Therefore, it wouldnt be wrong if we consider
earbuds and over-the-ear headphones a primary
    culprit to hearing loss condition.
  • Over the years, this technology has been improved
to be louder and to offer users with the best
experience by delivering music directly into our
ears and reducing or cancelling background noise.

10
  • As per the research, as much as 65 of people use
music devices above 85 decibels regularly,
resulting in permanent hearing damage. Watching
music, TV shows and even YouTube videos through
headphones can be equally damaging if done for
    extended periods.

11
  • Online videos on social media also cause harm to
the ears as they dont have built-in standards
    for volume.

12
  • This is modern day hearing loss which is
impacting most of the people around. Its worth
taking a step back to think about if the
environment or the technology you are using is a
    threat to your hearing.

13
HEARING LOSS IN YOUNG PEOPLE
  • With over 90 of young people using headphones
daily, it wouldnt come as a surprise to see
young people suffering from hearing loss from
hearing loud noises earlier than their previous
    generations.

14
  • Though both genders are experiencing hearing
problems, young men are more likely to be
affected, with 32 of those aged between 20 and
39 having some degree of noise-induced hearing
    loss.

15
HEARING LOSS FROM NOISE AND MUSIC
  • Noise and music have affected peoples hearing
for generations. From standing too close to the
speaker at rock concerts to listening loud music
from your smartphone playlist, many of us are
habitual of listening to music at a loud volume
for long hours throughout the day.

16
  • Thats why noise-induced hearing loss is so
common nowadays. This type of hearing loss is
gradual and can be difficult to spot before you
require a serious treatment like hearing aids.

17
So, HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
  • When you are unnecessarily turning up the volume
on your smartphone while your headphones are
plugged in, does your device ever warn you to not
exceed to a certain level? It does, right? But
many of us simply ignore it.

18
  • Listen to your phone. Theres a reason why its
called a smartphone, it knows what its talking
about. Most devices are capable of reaching a
maximum of 120 decibels, which is well beyond 85
decibels the level of sound that starts to cause
    minor damage.
  • What can you do to protect your hearing from the
    technology?

19
HEARING PROTECTION IMPORTANCE
  • It is natural for your hearing ability to
decrease with age, but the decrease in hearing
due to technology is far less natural and affects
people more quickly. Therefore, its important to
protect your hearing at all times.

20
  • To reduce your risk of hearing loss caused by
headphones, start adhering to 60-60 rule that
most audiologists recommend. The rule states that
you should only listen to music through your
headphone at a maximum of 60 volume, for no
longer than 60 minutes per day.

21
  • If you feel that you are struggling to hear, the
best step is to speak to an audiologist
immediately. A professional can determine the
underlying cause of your hearing problem and
suggest high-quality hearing aids from reputed
brands like Starkey, Widex, Oticon or Siemens
    hearing aids.
