Function Of Step Up/Step Down Transformers
  • Step up/Down voltage transformers are amongst the
    crucial units that efficaciously perform the task
    of changing the electrical voltage to a different
    value for meeting the individual needs of the
    power consumers.
  • Using the principle of electromagnetic induction,
    these types of transformers increase or decrease
    the voltage of alternating current for the safe
    consumption of industrial, commercial or domestic
    users.
  • The step-up transformers convert low voltage on
    the primary side to high voltage on the secondary
    side. On the other hand, a step-down transformer
    helps convert high voltage on the primary side to
    low voltage on the secondary side.

Basic Designing of Step Down transformers
  • The designing and working of a transformer is
    dependent on the number of windings on the
    primary and secondary. The following formula is
    used to design a transformer
  • Ns/Np  Vs/Vp
  • Where,
  • Ns is the number of turns on the secondary
  • Np is the number of turns on the primary
  • Vs is the voltage on the secondary
  • Vpis the voltage on the primary
  • Therefore, while designing a step-down
    transformer, Npgt Ns. This makes Vpgt Vs.
