Research metrics are considered as an important
tool in assessing the academics papers for
institutions or academic organizations.
It is utilised as the form of the quality
assessment tool for performing normal science
research.
Introduction
The h-index is considered as the commonly used
form of author- level metric which helps to
report the authors output depending on the
total publication and total citations made in
research work. This study discussed the
importance of research metrics and its
difference with h-index in respect to academic
research.
4
Importance of Research Metrics
Research metrics or rather Scientometrics, is a co
mbined word or two important words, such as
Science and Metrics. The importance of metrics
is thus found in quantitative analysis, where the
researcher conducts different and various
scientific domains. The citation indexes thus
are found to utilise in Scientometrics. These
indexes are necessary to assess the journals and
it measures the Impact Factor or IF of the
article.
5
Importance of H-index in Research Metrics
The h-index has been introduced by Hirsch in the
year 2005. It helps the researcher in
calculating the research achievement in
scientific research. It depends on individual
publications of the author and also the number of
citation based on which publications are needed
to attract. H-index is a type of author-level
metrics. It helps to indicate the number of
articles or h that is found to be cited with the
least or h number of times.
6
H-metrics can count highly cited paper
irrespective of any reason of being referenced,
like in the case of negative reason, this metric
can be used.
Limitations
while using H-metrics
The metric process sometimes limits the authors
through the total number in the publications.
It does not consider the variations within in the
case of an average number of the
publication. There is a relatively low
resolution in the case of h-metrics.
7
How to Improve H-index
  • In the competitive environment of the university,
the quantitative indicator like h-index becomes
    more important.
  • The citations are found to increase when the
researcher will cite his or college and the
other researcher may also follow the same.
  • The most important process is to increase the
searching through the search machines, like,
  • Google Scholars, Research Gate or Pub Med etc.
  • H-index can be increased by promoting some
    research papers or journals through
  • compatible search engines.

8
Other than this author-level h-metric there are
journal-level and article-level research metrics
which have also some specific impact in the
research field.
Other Types of Research Metrics
Impact Factor, Eigen factor or Immediacy Index
are the Journal-level research metrics.
The impact factor is utilised very frequently and
it is published by Journal Citation Reports or
JCR.
Eigen factor provides a higher weightage citation
from the influential journals. Immediacy Index
indicates the average number of the article
citation. Contd..
9
It is considered only at the first publication of
the journal or article. Article-level metrics
are utilised for quantifying the impact of the
published articles. Almetrics is considered as
the alternative form of traditional
citation. Almetrics is a type of article-level
metrics and it includes peer reviews, citations
made on Wikipedia or any public policy documents,
like research blogs, bookmarks or any media
coverage etc.
10
Therefore, the value of research metrics is very
significant in scientific research as it helps
to assess the quality and level of citations in
research articles.
Conclusion
  • H-index is a common and popular tool in research
metrics and the use of h-metrics can be improved
by promoting this tool in more number of
    researchers.
