Jeffery Whippo Explains the Significance of
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs in Leadership
2
Jeffery D Whippo Reveals How Abraham Maslows
Hierarchy of Needs Came About
  • According to professional educator and business
leader Jeffery Whippo, Abraham Maslows Hierarchy
of Needs came about through his study of human
    motivations.
  • He says that Maslow characterized these
motivations into a hierarchal list of needs that
can be used for developing a style of leadership
that meets the needs of their employees, by
inspiring workers to be their best by filling
    their needs through personal development.

Jeffery D Whippo Describes How Maslow Developed
His Five Hierarchical Categories
  • Jeffery D Whippo describes how Maslow developed
his five hierarchical categories and depicted
them as a pyramid of needs.
  • The bottom level or foundation of the pyramid
consists of the most fundamental, physiological
    needs, like pain avoidance.
  • The next level in the pyramid is the need to feel
safe from things, like illness or physical harm.
  • The third level of the pyramid consists of social
needs, or simply the need to feel accepted by
    others.
  • The fourth level of the pyramid consists of needs
concerning self-image. These are the human needs
for both self-respect and the respect of ones
    peers.
  • The top or highest level of the pyramid is
self-actualization, which is concerned with needs
that deal with personal growth and development.

4
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs from a Leadership
Perspective
  • Jeffery Whippo feels that from a leadership
perspective, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs can
guide leaders in refining their leadership styles
for meeting the specific needs of their
    followers.
  • Most leaders probably will not have to worry
about meeting the most fundamental needs on the
pyramid such as hunger, but the second level of
needs concerned with worker safety for example
can be a need that they would need to focus on.

5
Jefferys Views on the Remaining Pyramid Levels
  • Jeffery further explains that promoting teamwork
and cross team collaboration could fill the
social needs of the third pyramid level.
  • Ensuring that employee understands their
importance to the team, company and the mission
of the company can help in securing the
    followers self-image.
  • According to Jeffery, once the first four levels
of the pyramid have been concentrated on, the
leader can focus his or her attention on
    fostering the followers personal development.
