What is Bulimia Nervosa?
  • Bulimia nervosa, also known as simply bulimia, is
    an eating disorder and mental health condition
    which causes a person to feel a
  • compulsion to try to control their weight. To do
    so, they may severely restrict the
  • amount of food they eat, then compensate by
    eating a large quantity of food which
  • they wish later to purge from their body.

Causes of Bulimia Nervosa
  • The exact cause of bulimia nervosa is currently
    unknown though it is
  • thought that multiple factors contribute to the
    development of this eating
  • disorder, including genetic, environmental,
    psychological, and cultural
  • influences. Some of the main causes include
  • Stressful transitions or life changes
  • History of abuse or trauma
  • Negative body image
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Professions or activities that focus on
    appearance/performance

Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa
  • There are certain symptoms that are unique to
    Bulimia Nervosa with are
  • not common with other eating disorders.
  • Constant weight fluctuations
  • Lack of control when eating
  • The disappearance of large amounts of food
  • Cycling between overeating and extreme fasting
  • Oral trauma, such as lacerations in the mouth or
    throat lining after
  • repeated vomiting
  • Broken blood vessels in the eyes
  • Electrolyte imbalances
