Title: Feel The Liveliness Of Prahalada’s Story At Ahobila Narasimha Temple
1Feel The Liveliness Of Prahaladas Story At
Ahobila Narasimha Temple
2- Ahobilam is one of the most sacred sites in the
Vaishnavite pantheon, being listed as one of the
Divya Desams. Located in the Kurnool district of
Andhra Pradesh, the sacred grounds are not just
restricted to one temple. - Nestled within the hills and amidst the forest
lies the Ahobilam complex, with nine unique
Narasimha temples spread out across the area. To
facilitate navigation for pilgrims, it is broadly
split into Upper Ahobilam and Lower Ahobilam. - Like every spiritual site in India, Ahobilam is
also rich in heritage. As mentioned before, it is
a temple complex dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the
avatar of Vishnu. - As the Sthala Puranam and lore surrounding the
site goes, Ahobilam is the place where Lord
Narasimha fulfilled his destiny by slaying
Hiranyakashipu, the evil demon king, right at the
threshold of the demons palace. Indeed, there
are many signs around Ahobilam that seem to
indicate the presence of a palace, long long ago!
3The Prodigal Son
Any tale that mentions Narasimha is incomplete
without speaking of his greatest disciple,
Prahalada. How ironic it is that Hiranyakashipus
own son would idolise the Lord himself! Did you
know that Prahalada is Mahabalis grandfather?
Clearly, greatness runs in the family. Prahalada
spent all of his early life at and around the
palace that we today call Ahobilam. As
Hiranyakashipus heir apparent, he was educated
by the best teachers in the region.
Hiranyakashipu wanted his son to be indoctrinated
in the ways of the Asuras, so Prahalada
frequented an ashrama that was taught by his
teachers, Sanda and Amarka. Despite all the
influence, Prahalada remained a staunch devotee
of the Lord day in and day out, much to
Hiranyakashipus frustration. The king ordered
his own son to be put to death, but the Lords
grace ensured Prahalada remained unscathed
throughout. Narasimha intervened, enraged and
bloodlusted, when Hiranyakashipu confronted his
son personally, and slaughtered Hiranyakashipu as
per the prophecy. Even after slaying the demon
king, the avatar of Vishnu was enraged beyond
compare, and it was Prahaladas devotion that
calmed him down.
