2. Sanjay Kandasamy, our first pediatric liver
transplant recipients story was covered by The
Week Magazine in January 2014 as the cover
story. He is leading a normal life 16 years
after transplant.
The first successful liver transplant program in
India was established at Apollo Hospitals, New
Delhi in 1998. Over a span of 18 years, many
milestones have been achieved. In 2012, 1200
solid organ transplants in children and adults
(840 kidney and 360 liver) were performed. The
Apollo Trans- plant Program thus became the
first transplant program in the world to perform
more than 1000 transplants in a year and Apollo
Delhi the busiest solid organ transplant centre
in the world by performing 813 transplants (269
liver, 544 kidney). Apollo Delhi has remained
the busiest solid organ transplant programme in
the world for 4 consecutive years since 2012. In
2016, 1440 transplants in adults and children
were performed. The Centre has treated patients
from over 21 countries. It has now a cumulative
experience of over 2850 liver transplant
operations including over 230 in children.

  • 1st successful adult cadaveric transplant in 1998
  • 1st successful liver transplant for acute liver
    failure in 1999
  • 1st combined liver kidney transplant in 1999
  • 1st successful liver transplant for HIV in 2008
  • Youngest pediatric liver transplant in India in
    2008
  • 1st successful liver transplant for Hepatitis B
    without using immunoglobulin in 2008
  • 1st successful liver transplant for Crigler
    Najjar Syndrome in 2008
  • 1st successful living related liver transplant
    for portal biliopathy in 2009
  • 10.1st international air rescue for a patient
    with acute liver failure in 2010
  • To commemorate 15 years of successful liver
    transplanta- tion in India, two events were
    organised in November 2013
  • 1. His Holiness, The Dalai Lama blessed our
    transplant recipients and donors on 30th
    November 2013.

a postage stamp to commemorate 15 years of Liver
Transplantation in India.
