How to get rid of medical and clinical waste
  • Waste management is everyones responsibility. If
people do not take care of the waste properly
then it will have a damaging impact on the
environment and other people. You cannot just
leave the waste laying around in the streets
especially the toxic and dangerous waste like the
medical or clinical waste. The clinical waste
consists of sharp items like needles and also
expired medicines and they can be dangerous for
the people who come across them and their
    surroundings.
  • All the health care facilities need to find a
proper way to get rid of the waste. They need to
hire professionals like skip hire in Tameside as
they have been trained and equipped to handle the
    waste.

3
Incineration
  • Most of the clinical waste is incinerated as
    there are many waste-to-energy technologies
    available nowadays. The process requires
extremely high temperatures so that the organic
substances present in the waste can be combusted.
During this waste treatment process, the
temperature is so high that the incinerated
material turns into ash, heat, and gas.
  • The waste treatment process produces a lot of
heat and the generated heat can be recycled as
heat energy. The process is good for the
environment as well because it reduces the mass
of the waste by about eighty percent along with
the volume by more than 95 percent. It only
leaves a small fraction of the waste which
reduces the negative impact of waste on the
environment. After the incineration process is
completed there is a tiny amount of waste left
    for the landfill site.

4
Autoclave sterilization
  • The medical and clinical waste is also disposed
of with autoclave sterilization system. The waste
that is infectious or hazardous needs to go
through the sterilization before it goes into the
landfill site. It is not safe for the environment
to put infectious medical waste in the landfill
because it can spread and cause serious damage to
the surroundings and the people that may come in
    contact with the people.
  • Most of the surgical items have become single-use
items so the health care facilities cannot use
them again. But even the single-use medical tools
need to treat the contaminated items before they
    are disposed of.
  • The autoclave sterilization units are just like
large pressure cookers. The process shreds the
waste and then puts the infected clinical waste
in a vessel that is made up of steel. High
pressure saturated steam is pumped in the steel
vessel and the temperature of the steam is about
160 degrees. The pressure is maintained for about
25 minutes and gives a chance to the hot air to
kill dangerous microorganisms. In the end, the
items are disintegrated in non-hazardous material.

5
Cont.
  • Autoclave sterilization is effective in reducing
the volume of the waste but it is not the best
choice if you are looking to recycle because only
17.5 residue is available for recycling. The
small amount of non-hazardous left after the
process is taken to incineration plants or
    landfill sites.
  • Healthcare facilities have a responsibility to
dispose of medical and clinical waste properly so
that they do not put people and the environment
    at risk.
