Put Safety First
Gardening brings plenty of health benefits, both
physical and mental. It is a low-impact form of
exercise, bringing with it all the bonuses of
physical activity including heart health, muscle
growth, and the prevention of age-related health
issues such as diabetes. Seniors may also
experience stress relief, mood boosts, decreased
feelings of depression, and heightened
self-esteem. However, in order to continue to
experience these benefits, you must put safety
first, especially during the hot summer months.
Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and keep
plenty of water nearby. Reduce your risk of
falling or becoming exhausted with a gardening
stool, protect your hands with gardening gloves,
and keep a phone handy in case you need to call
for help.

Raised Bed Gardening
A raised bed garden not only means less bending,
but having your plants high off the ground makes
it harder for weeds and insects to settle in. A
raised bed can be built as high as you need, and
using stone, decorative blocks, brick, or timber
makes it an eye-catching landscape feature as
well.
Vertical Gardening
If you have an available fence, wall, or can have
one built, vertical gardening is a unique
gardening method to check out. Plants are grown
in containers that are attached to a vertical
panel. You can create your own or buy a tower
with ready-made slats. This method is also good
for those who have limited space.

Container Gardening
Container gardening is great for those with
limited space, and can be easily moved around for
easier access. You can use terra cotta pots and
paint them to your liking, or opt for lightweight
plastic pots. While you often see decorative
plants in containers, vegetables such as beans,
beets, lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes can be
grown in containers too

Keep it Low-Maintenance
Gardening requires a lot of labor-intensive work
such as watering, weeding, and hoeing, but there
are ways to make your garden low-maintenance.
Plant perennials such as peonies, hostas, and
daisies that are heat-resistant and return year
after year, as well as drought-tolerant plants
like coneflower and butterfly weed to cut down on
your watering. Add a layer of mulch to help
retain moisture and prevent weeds, and consider
having a drip irrigation system installed so you
arent hurting your back and arms carrying bulky
hoses and watering cans. You can keep your entire
yard low-maintenance with these landscaping ideas
