Pondicherry summers (March to June)
  • Pondicherry witnesses long summers and the
temperature ranges between 26.3 and 42.0 degree
Celsius or sometimes even beyond that. Summer in
Pondicherry begins by mid of March and continues
till the end of June and remains extremely hot
and humid. In the bright heat of summers, the
scorching hotness may not be a favorable time to
enjoy the beauty of the spectacular history and
culture of this quaint city, as the sweltering
heat will most likely leave you dehydrated and
    exhausted.
  • The humidity during these months can go as high
as 93 which in itself makes the weather
conditions hot, sticky and sweltering. However,
this is also the time when less number of people
are swarming the beach, which makes for the
perfect season to visit the beach and partake in
the range of fun water sports like surfing,
kayaking, canoeing, swimming, scuba diving and
jet skiing, or to take a leisurely stroll by the
beach, which is difficult to enjoy as much in
    winters.
  • Being close to the coast, the temperature does
not alter as much as other cities, and the
daytime is usually marked by scorching heat and
heat waves, which may deter you from exploring
the citys famed structures during the day, while
in the nights, the temperature is comparatively
cooler. May constitutes the hottest season of the
month and is certainly not the best month to
visit Pondicherry. Following a little shower in
the month of June, the temperature drops to a
minimum of 27 degree Celsius and hovers between
30 degree and 32 degree Celsius. It is better to
avoid traveling to the coastal city during summer
    season.

5
  • However, summer is also the time when the crowds
are less, making it an ideal time to enjoy a
peaceful vacation in this little town. This is
the best time to enjoy some great deals for
tourists at one of the innumerable
    accommodations, bespoke hotels and lodging
services, which cater to all types of tourists.
As per your needs, you can book a hotel that is
closest to most of the excursions in Pondicherry.
You can also consider staying in one of the
colonial bungalow turned quaint small hotel, that
    promise some real quality experience.
  • Summer is also the time when the important
Villianur Temple Car festival takes place. This
religious festival is held on the full moon
between mid-May and mid-June and holds a special
divine significance for the locals. During the
festival, a yatra with a temple car carrying an
image of the God Shri Gokilambal Thirukameshwara
circumscribes the entire city amidst grand
    celebrations.
  • The coastal city is dotted with pristine beaches,
    colonial buildings and beautifully decorated
promenades, and offers a splendid view of the
magical sunrise or sunset. Dont forget to watch
the sun rise over the deep blue expanse of the
Bay of Bengal or enroll for a Heritage Walk
across the town, which is the perfect thing to
take you back to the old world charm of French
    era.
  • Pay a visit to some of the towns most important
French monuments including the French War
Memorial, Old Light House, Governors Residence,
Place de la Rebublique, Pondicherry Museum (known
for its collection of sculptures and snail
shells) and the statues of Joan of Arc and
Dupleix, to get a feel of French architecture at
    its finest.

Pondicherry Monsoon (July to September)
7
  • Pondicherry receives heavy to light rainfall
during the monsoons and the average high and low
temperatures usually range from 25 degree Celsius
to 35 degree Celsius. The climate is mainly humid
throughout. The erratic rain showers at times
resulting in excessive humidity, but it also
lends a special charm to explore the true essence
of flora and fauna of this spectacular city,
which makes it one of the most sought after
domestic destinations for monsoon holiday. It is
also the best time to enjoy the surrounding
tourist spots of the city that spring back to
life in lush greenery after the scorching summer.
  • Monsoon in Pondicherry sets in by July and
continues till September, and is perhaps the most
unpredictable of all the seasons. While the onset
of monsoon brings a sense of relief from the
scorching summers, and allows you to take lazy
strolls around the vibrant and lively streets of
Pondicherry, the rainfall occurs in rather
    varying degrees.
  • Monsoon is the perfect time to enjoy the natural
beauty of Pondicherry and its famous beaches
namely, Plage Paradise, Puducherry Beach and
Karaikal Beach. Also, savour the authentic local
delicacies with a slight French taste mingled
with local South Indian twist, at the beach
chowpati. If you want to travel with the clouds
and a little drizzle then Monsoon is the best
time to go Pondicherry. Promenade is the most
popular beach here, ideal for watching the golden
sunrise in the dawn or taking a leisure walk in
the dusk. The famous Old Light House, Gandhi
Statue and Statue of Dupleix can be seen here.

8
  • It is the best time to visit Pondicherry during
this season, as the biggest and most important
celebration for Pondicherry falls in the month of
    August, when Sri Aurobindos birthday
celebrations are held with great vigor and pride
by all the locals of Pondicherry and the city is
at its vibrant best. This birthday coincides with
the Independence Day and the crux of all the
celebration lies in the renowned Aurobindo Ashram
which conducts a series of significant
celebratory activities. Its a revered place to
meditate and enjoy  serenity and peace.
  • If you happen to be in the city on a Sunday,
dont miss the Sunday Market on the sprawling MG
Road. An array of things is sold here at very
cheap price and the best part is you can bargain
    on your deal.

Pondicherry winters (October to March)
10
  • October sees the gradual transition to winter
which extends till early March. During this
season the days are bright and sunny, the weather
is mild and extremely pleasant, while evenings
and nights can be little chilly, making it the
best season to visit Pondicherry. Winters in
Pondicherry is characterized by pleasant weather
conditions and the beauty of the place increases
manifold. It is recommended to carry light warm
woolens as the temperature at night can stoop
    down to very low levels.
  • The temperature during the winter months hovers
between 21 degree Celsius to 32 degree Celsius.
Though the city enjoys a pleasant climate
year-round, the best time to go Pondicherry is
during the winter season when the weather
conditions are perfect to traverse the charming
town. In the winters, the weather stays
delightful and enjoyable and this is when you can
get the best out of your vacation and visit
famous attractions like Basilica of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus, Rock Beach and Ousteri Lake.
  • The climatic conditions are conducive for
sightseeing and you can also partake in the grand
festivities during this season like the splendid
International Yoga festival which is held on the
7th of January every year and brings in huge
tourism in the city. During the festival,
    participants indulge in numerous activities,
workshops, seminars and discussions and exchange
ideas on various topics relating to the central
theme. One can also enjoy a number of classical
folk dance and music performances, magic shows as
well as demonstration of different Yoga
techniques that are held on a large scale which
makes for an overall enlightening experience.
With so many activities going around, youll see
Pondicherry all together a different place around.

11
  • Pondicherry in winter months is full of hustle-
bustle and myriad of lively events and activities
keep taking place, thus making it most preferable
and the best time to visit Pondicherry. For
    spirituality seekers, Pondicherry houses
Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville that draws
thousands of tourists to explore this beautiful
    city. The golden spherical structure,
Matrimandir, is the main attraction of Auroville,
    which features a meditation chamber.
  • During the winter season, the place might also
receive light showers of rain from time to time
as Pondicherry is a coastal city. The popularity
of Pondicherry during winters also makes it the
peak season which brings with it a huge influx of
tourists and fewer tranquil places to enjoy.
Winters are the time the city receives huge rush
and is overcrowded with tourists who come from
across the country to admire its beauty. The
hotel room fares also go up and most of the
prominent resorts and heritage properties might
already be booked and not be available on
    weekends.
