Shielded metal arc welding or popularly known as
SMAW Welding, is also called manual metal arc
welding (MMA or MMAW), flux shielded arc welding
or informally as stick welding, is a manual arc
welding method that uses a consumable electrode
coated with a flux to put the weld.
An electric current, within the type of either AC
or DC from a welding power supply, is utilities
to create an electrical arc between the conductor
and also the metals to be joined. The work piece
and also the electrode melt forming a pool of
liquid metal (weld pool) that cools to create a
joint. Since weld is set, the flux coating of the
conductor disintegrates, giving off vapors that
function a shielding gas and providing a layer of
slag, each of that shields the weld space from
atmospheric contamination.
Because of the flexibility of the process and
also the simplicity of its equipment and
operation, shielded metal arc welding is one in
all the world's 1st and preferred welding
processes. SMAW continues to be used extensively
within the construction of heavy steel structures
and in industrial fabrication. The process is
used primarily to weld iron and steels (including
unstained steel) however aluminium, nickel and
copper alloys can even be welded with this
technique.

Safety Measures SMAW Welding, like different
welding process, are often a dangerous and
unhealthy, if correct precautions aren't taken.
The method uses an open electric discharge that
presents a risk of burns which are prevented by
personal protective equipment within the type of
significant leather gloves and sleeve jackets. In
addition, the brightness of the weld space will
result in a condition known as arc eye, within
which UV lights causes inflammation of the cornea
and might burn the retinas of the eyes. Helmets
that are used by Welders are designed with dark
face plates are worn to prevent such exposure,
and in recent years, new helmet models are
created that feature a face plate that
self-darkens upon exposure to high amounts of
ultraviolet light. To safeguard bystanders,
particularly in industrial environments,
semitransparent welding curtains often surround
the welding space. These curtains, fabricated
from a PVC film, protect near staff from exposure
to the ultraviolet light from the electrical arc,
however mustn't be accustomed replace the filter
glass utilized in helmets. Electrodes The choice
of electrode for SMAW depends on variety of
things, together with the weld material, welding
position and also the desired weld properties.
The electrode is coated in an exceedingly metal
mixture known as flux, which supplies off gases
because it decomposes to stop weld contamination,
introduces deoxidizers to purify the weld, causes
weld-protecting slag to create, improves the arc
stability, and provides alloying elements to
enhance the weld quality. Electrodes is divided
into 3 groups - those designed to soften quickly
are known as "fast-fill" electrodes, those
designed to solidify quickly are known as
"fast-freeze" electrodes, and intermediate
electrodes pass the name "fill-freeze" or
"fast-follow" electrodes. Fast-fill electrodes
are designed to melt quickly in an order that the
welding speed is readily maximized, whereas
fast-freeze electrodes provide filler metal that
solidifies quickly, creating welding in a type of
positions possible by preventing the weld pool
from shifting considerably before hardening.
