Title: Obesity (Weight Loss) Treatment

1
Obesity (Weight Loss) Treatment
2
What is Obesity?
  • Obesity is a life-long progressive, life
threatening condition marked by the excess
accumulation of body fat, which can significantly
    reduce life expectancy.
  • When weight reaches extreme levels, it is
called MORBID OBESITY and is a chronic condition
with numerous medical, psychological and social
    consequences.

3
  • Now you want to know if you are obese or not, and
this is easy, all you want is to measure your
weight in Kilograms (kg) and your height in
meters (m), and then use this formula -

4
  • This formula will give you your body mass index
(BMI). The obesity is diagnosed when the (BMI) is
30 or more. Now look to this table below to know
    more about the (BMI).

BMI Result
Less than 18.5 Under Weight
18.8 24.9 Normal Weight
25 29.9 Over Weight
30 40 Obese
More than 40 Very Obese
5
Causes of Obesity
  • The balance between calorie intake and energy
    expenditure determines a person's weight. If a
person eats more calories than he or she burns
(metabolizes), the person gains weight. The most
common causes of obesity are -
  • Overeating
  • Genetics
  • Physical inactivity
  • Pregnancy
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Medical Conditions
  • A diet high in simple carbohydrates

6
How can Obesity affect you?
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Infertility
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Certain cancers
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Liver and kidney disorders
  • Joint Pain/Osteoarthritis/Gout
  • Depression and anxiety disorders
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux disease

7
Why should consider Weight Loss Surgery?
  • Because it works! Surgical treatment for obesity
is the only treatment that reliably produces
significant and sustained weight loss. People
with clinically severe obesity are at great risk
    for developing many associated medical
conditions. Research has shown that surgical
treatment results in significant weight loss and
improvement in most problems associated with
obesity. Surgical treatment for clinically severe
obesity has been endorsed by the National
Institutes of Health, the World Health
Organization, the American Heart Association, the
American Dietetic Association, and the American
    Obesity Association.

8
What are the outcomes of weight loss surgery?
  • Weight loss by any means often results in
    considerable improvement or complete resolution
of most obesity related medical conditions. The
degree of improvement is not necessarily related
to the amount of weight loss. "Improvement"
refers to a reduced requirement for treatment,
whereas "complete resolution" implies a cure.
    Dramatic improvement occurs in abnormalities
associated with diabetes. Within days of surgery,
fasting blood-sugar levels are normal, blood
levels of insulin are lower, and most patients
are able to be discharged without insulin. There
is also improvement in hypertension, blood
lipids, and sleep apnea in a large percentage of
    patients.

9
How much weight can one expect to lose after
surgery?
  • Most patients lose between 50 to 70 percent of
their excess body weight over about one to one
and half years. Some reach their ideal weight but
most don't. Excess body weight is the weight
    above your ideal body weight.

10
Can gain the weight back?
  • Long-term results after sleeve gastric to my and
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass have shown that patients
usually regain less than 15 percent of the weight
they lost after ten years. However, if you go
back to your old eating habits and don't exercise
at all, you might gain more than that.

advanced laparoscopic and obesity surgeon. He is
