Title: Different types of food allergy and tests in Dubai

1
DIFFERENT FORMATS OF FOOD ALLERGY
2
  • Four main allergic infections caused by food to
    our immune system are
  • Food allergy
  • Food intolerance
  • Celiac disease
  • Food poisoning

3
Food allergy
  • It is a condition when certain types of food are
rejected abnormally by human immune system. The
range of reactions tends to vary from mild to
    severe.
  • Food allergy occurs when Immunoglobulin E (Ig E),
part of human bodys immune system binds to food
    molecules. Itching generator, histamine is
triggered by the protein present in the food.
  • Symptoms Itchiness, swelling of tongue,
vomiting, diarrhea, hives, trouble breathing, and
    low blood pressure.

4
Food allergy
  • Diagnosis Based on a medical history,
elimination of particular diet, skin prick test,
    oral food challenge.
  • Treatment Avoiding the food in question, having
a plan if exposure occurs, using a medical
identification tag or jewellery and also by the
use of epinephrine suggested by doctor.

5
Food intolerance
  • It is a damaging reaction which occurs when our
body fails to breakdown food due to the
deficiency of an enzyme or other process
involving the digestion process. Most commonly
seen condition is of fructose malabsorption and
    salicylate insensitivity.
  • Causes Drugs originated from plants such as
aspirin can also cause these kinds of reactions.
  • Diagnosis It is often more difficult to diagnose
    than a food allergy.

6
Food intolerance
  • Symptoms This can affect skin, respiratory tract
    and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) either
    individually or in combination.
  • On skin it may be seen as skin rashes, hives,
    angioedema, dermatitis and eczema.
  • Respiratory tract symptoms can include nasal
    congestion, sinusitis, pharyngeal irritations,
    asthma and unproductive cough.
  • GIT symptoms include mouth ulcers, abdominal
    cramp, nausea, gas, intermittent diarrhea,
constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and
    also may include anaphylaxis.

7
Food intolerance
  • Diagnosis of food intolerance can include
hydrogen breath testing for lactose intolerance
    and fructose malabsorption, professionally
supervised elimination diets and ELIZA testing
for IgG-mediated immune responses to specific
    foods
  • Treatment Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months
and avoiding dairy products for 4 months or
taking oral lactose usually solves the problem.

8
Food poisoning
  • Food poisoning or Food borne illness is any
illness resulting from the food spoilage of
    contaminated food, pathogenic bacteria, viruses,
or parasites that contaminate food as well as
toxins such as poisonous mushrooms and various
species of beans that have not been boiled for at
    least 10 minutes.
  • Symptoms Diarrhea, fever, vomiting and aches.

9
Food poisoning
  • Causes These are often caused by improper
handling, preparation, or food storage. And also
sometimes large variety of toxins that affect the
environment and pesticides or medicines in food
or toxic substances such as poisonous mushrooms
and various types of beans that have not boiled
    for at least 10 minutes.

10
Food poisoning
  • Diagnosis It is often done based on a detailed
history that includes how long one is sick,
symptoms and particular foods that have eaten.
Physical exam for signs of dehydration, blood
test, stool examination for parasites are also
    conducted.
  • Treatments Replacement of lost fluids and
electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and
calcium. Use of antibiotics prescribed by doctor.

11
Celiac disease
  • This is a chronic auto immune disorder that
    mainly affects the small intestine.
  • Causes It is caused by gluten, a group of
various proteins found in wheat and in other
grains such as barley and rye and also in some
types of oats. Gluten when exposed to people who
are genetically predisposed causes an auto immune
disorder. Antibodies due to the presence of
gluten signal certain antibodies to damage the
    villi of small intestine.

12
Celiac disease
  • Symptoms Gastrointestinal problems such as
    chronic diarrhea, abdominal distention, appetite
loss, and malabsorption and among children
condition is failure to grow normally.
  • This disease often develops between six months
    and two years of age.
  • For people above two years, mild or absent
gastrointestinal symptoms are found or at
    sometimes no obvious symptoms.

13
Celiac disease
  • Diagnosis Diagnosis of this disease can be done
by various methods such as checking for family
    history, blood antibody test, intestinal
biopsies, genetic testing, response to gluten
    withdrawal.
  • Treatment Having a gluten free diet.

14
Conclusion
  • People who are sensitive should be little careful
while dealing with food. Even for some people a
little bite of allergenic foods for some people
can lead to serious symptoms. In case of children
parents should be strict with diet.
  • Children and adult allergies follow different
patterns. In children it may because of milk,
eggs and peanuts. People with severe food allergy
should always carry an epi-nephrine auto injector
device at all times. Children should be taught to
how to use them. In case of children school
staffs and people relating to them daily must be
    made aware of the allergy.

15
Conclusion
  • According to Dubai health authority study
reports reported by Khaleej Times, one out of
five people in Dubai are prone to some kind of
allergy. If you are in need of an allergy test in
Dubai, you can reach world class quality lab FML
    for expertise checkup.
