  • The range of voice assistants Amazon Echo will
surely surprise this year in the USA, especially
after the release of Google Home. And as often,
each new product brings its share of
    dysfunctions.
  • Here are some of the problems you may encounter
on the Echo, Amazon echo dot setup, Echo Tap and
Echo Show, with suggestions for solving them.

1. Wi-Fi Connection Is Inconsistent or
Nonexistent
  • The Amazon Echo's connectivity status is
indicated by the power LED at the bottom of the
back of the device. A white light means that the
reception is good and orange indicates that there
    is no Wi-Fi connection.
  • If you experience intermittent connectivity or no
Wi-Fi connection with your Amazon Echo, here's
    what to try.
  • Alexa App Setup Amazon Alexa Setup

5
  • First, follow the usual old-fashioned procedure
restart your modem and turn off and on your Echo.
  • If that does not help and the rest of the network
is working well, you can think about
repositioning your Echo away from devices that
    might interfere with the signal.
  • You can also reduce congestion on your Wi-Fi
network by removing unused devices from the
    network.

  • If you have a dual-band modem, you may have two
networks installed. Try to go from 2.4GHz to 5GHz
or vice versa. 5GHz promises less interference,
better speeds and a more stable and often less
    congested connection.
  • Alternatively, 2.4GHz may be better for devices
that may be further away from the router,
especially if the signal has to pass through the
    walls.
  • Move your Echo to a higher surface, such as a
    shelf, to avoid signal interference.

2. Alexa Does Not Connect To Other Devices
  • One of Alexa's many talents is her ability to act
as a voice-activated intelligent home center for
a wide range of devices from manufacturers such
as Philips, SmartThings or Nest. However,
configuration and connection is not always easy.

  • First, make sure your device is really compatible
with Echo. It may need a bridge like the
    SmartThings or Wink hub.
  • If all else fails, you can usually rely on If
This Then contact Amazon Alexa device support to
help fill the compatibility gaps. There is even
    an official Alexa IFTTT channel.
  • The next step, of course, is to follow the
installation instructions for the device before
asking Alexa to find out. You may need to
download a companion app to the smartphone

11
  • Of course, make sure all devices are connected to
the same WiFi network as the Echo.

3. Alexa Does Not Understand Me
  • "I'm sorry, I do not understand the question" can
sometimes be the most pronounced sentence of
Alexa and it can be very frustrating. Alexa's
speech recognition naturally improves as she gets
to know you, but there are ways to avoid
    repeating yourself.
  • Start by using the voice training tool. Go to
Settings gt Voice Training in the Alexa app and
you will be asked to state 25 pre-selected
phrases to Amazon Alexa help learn your lexicon.

14
  • Then check what Alexa really heard. The Alexa app
keeps a note of all your requests, so you can see
exactly what she understood. Go to the
application settings and click on History. Here
you can identify badly-recognized words and
    perhaps express them more clearly.
  • Finally, look at where Amazon Alexa is. Is the
object located near noisy appliances such as an
air conditioning unit, TV, stereo or dishwasher?
Amazon also says that microwaves or baby monitors
could also cause interference, and the firm
advises keeping Echo at least 20 centimeters off
    a wall.

4. Alexa Does Not Connect To My Bluetooth Devices
  • Amazon Echo supports Advanced Audio Distribution
Profile (A2DP SNK) and Audio / Video Remote
Control Profile (AVRCP). The first step is to
make sure your Bluetooth device has the required
    battery charge.

17
  • If you still have problems, you can unplug and
re-sync your Bluetooth devices. Open the Alexa
app and click Settings. Click on your Echo
device, select Bluetooth and Clear all aired
    devices".
  • To pair the devices, say Pair to put the Echo
in discovery mode. Then access the Bluetooth
settings of your device or application to pair as
usual. Alexa will then confirm the connection.

5. Streaming Services Are Not Streamed
  • One of the best skills of Echo is its ability to
stream media from multiple sources, such as
Spotify, TuneIn or Deezer. However, if you
experience broadcast problems, it is likely that
this is due to WiFi interference. If this is the
problem, follow the steps previously described.
  • Other potential culprits may include your
Internet speed and even the firewall that you
    have on your network.

20
  • If your connection is less than 0.5 Mbps, you
probably do not have enough luck to benefit from
    effective streaming.
  • In addition, Amazon recommends that you make sure
that the following ports are open if you perform
    additional security measures

6. Reduction of Unwanted Triggers
  • If you do not want your speaker to be triggered
whenever the word "Alexa" is spoken, on TV or by
a neighbor for example, it may be better to make
a small change. You can change the recognition
word in the Alexa app by choosing Settingsgt Your
Echogt Edit Recognition Word. Unfortunately, you
will have the choice between "Amazon" and "echo
setup help". Not very funny is not it?

23
  • Of course, you can still press the microphone
button at the top of the Echo to temporarily
prevent it from listening to your conversations
    and other TV shows.

7. Alexa Does Not Do What Is Asked Of Her
  • Alexa has access to about 25,000 skills and all
will not work as you think. If a particular
function does not do what is said to him. To fix
this, we can try to deactivate and reactivate.

26
  • In the Alexa app, you can navigate to Your
Skills ", find the skill and navigate to "Manage
Preferences". You can turn them on and off. This
    could solve the problem.
  • If this is not the case, you must use the
application to completely disable the skill and
then reactivate it. Once you're done, restart
your Amazon Alexa device and see if that solves
    the problem.

8. If All Else Fails...
  • This should only be a last resort, but you can do
a factory reset of your Amazon Echo and start
afresh. There is a reset button next to the AC
    adapter.

29
  • You will need to use a pin (or something as small
and pointed). Hold down the button until the
light ring turns orange to reset. The only thing
to remember is that you will have to repeat the
entire configuration and your devices. Contact us
if you are facing such problems to get quick
    help.
