Title: Hernia: Common types and causes

1
Hernia Common types and causes
  • A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue
protrudes out through a weak spot in a
surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It
develops mostly in the abdomen area due to muscle
weakening through which an organ or fatty tissue
pushes out. The most common types of hernia are
    inguinal, incisional, femoral, umbilical, and
    hiatal.

2
Major causes leading to Hernia
  • One of the main cause is practicing unguided
heavy lifting exercises, that lead to excessive
    pressure in delicate internal organs
  • Chronic coughing and constipation
  • Obesity and major abdominal injury
  • Chronic lung disorders
  • Week muscular strength due to lack of nutrition

3
Types of hernia
  • There are many types of hernias that develop in
human body, out of which the most common types of
    hernia are
  • Inguinal Hernia It is the most common type of
hernia that develops when a part of the intestine
abnormally projects through a gap into the
abdominal muscles. It cause severe pain and is
often developed due to bad posture or heavy
    lifting exercises.
  • Umbilical Hernia It occurs when some fatty
tissue pushes within an area near the belly,
through a weak spot surrounding abdominal wall.
  • Incisional Hernia It develops from scar of
previous surgery, through which the hernia
    protrudes.

  • Femoral Hernia It mainly occurs near the groin
or thigh region where a section of tissue slides
through the wall of the femoral canal, causing
the patient to develop femoral hernia.
  • Interstitial hernia Primarily spotted in the
groin region, this type of hernia develops when
an organ shifts from its original muscle
position. An interstitial hernia is commonly
spotted within the folds of the anterior
abdominal wall and is often hard to operate upon.
  • Hiatus Hernia Complex hernia type in which part
of stomach bulges within the diaphragm through
the intermediate part of the chest.
