Staying Motivated When Grant Writing
There is nothing more depressing that writing
grant after grant and receiving knock-back after
knock-back. You begin to wonder if grant writing
is a cost-effective use of your time. You begin
to doubt your ability as a grant writer. You
begin to wonder if you will ever get that
breakthrough you are chasing. Take heart! Even
the most seasoned grant writer experiences
seasons of success and seasons of failure. So
how do we stay motivated for grant writing when
the dollars are not flowing?
3
Here are our Top Tips
2. Learn from the Learned
1. Return to the Reason
4. Ask for Assistance
3. Progress not Perfection
4
Return to the Reason
Chances are, the reason you started grant writing
in the first place is because you have a very
worthy project that needs financial backing. Ill
bet that very worthy project is something that
would address a very real need in the community
and benefit many people, not just you and your
organisation. Its probably something that you
are very passionate about or, at least, you were
back when you first started to seek funding. So,
when the grant money doesnt flow always return
to the reason. Tell yourself why your proposal
matters, how much difference it will make and why
it is important. Rediscover the drive that
caused you to begin the grant writing journey in
the first place and then harness it again. Write
for joy, not for money! Write because you care,
and you want to change the world!
5
Learn from the Learned
Find some more experienced grant writers and pick
their brains. Ill bet you will find that all of
them have had long droughts between grant writing
successes. Ask them how they stay motivated. Ask
them what they did to finally breakthrough. Ask
them if they will review your work for you.
Better yet, find a grant writing mentor and ask
them to coach you. And read some successful
proposals and ask yourself what they did that you
did not.
6
Progress not Perfection
Remember you are in a competition and in any
competition, there are winners and losers. When
there are hundreds of grant applications, you
should expect rejection. However, its important
that you dont take it personally. Use every set
back as an opportunity for growth. Often funding
bodies dont give feedback, but that shouldnt
stop you from seeking it from others. What could
you have done better? How could you improve?
What have you missed? Remember, the goal is
progress, not perfection.
