Title: How to Decide If You Should Get a Part-Time Job for the Upcoming School Year

1
How to Decide If You Should Get a Part-Time Job
for the Upcoming School Year
2
  • Getting a part-time job could be a good option
if you are concerned about paying for your
education. The extra income will mean youll be
able to afford more than the basics, which may
    improve your postsecondary experience. However,
there will be some tradeoffs, such as a limited
social life and less time to study.
  • Everyone is different. You need to figure out
what is the right decision for you.

3
Do You Have Time in Your Schedule?
  • Depending on what you are studying, it may be
impossible for you to work part time. For
instance, if you have a heavy workload or need to
spend time in the lab, working may take too much
time away from studying. If your performance at
school is going to suffer, youd better look for
    a loan or scholarship instead.

4
Do You Have a Clear Career Plan?
  • If youre unsure about what you want to do
and are just attending postsecondary school to
gain a degree, it may be worthwhile to work.
Youll learn more about yourself while avoiding
    too much debt.

5
  • On the flip side, if you already know exactly
what you want to do after you graduate, it may be
better to focus on your educational goals. The
exception is if you can find a part-time job that
is relevant to your future career. Unfortunately,
it is more common to find such opportunities in
volunteer jobs and internships (which may be
    unpaid).

6
Will Working Motivate You?
  • Working to pay for your education may
motivate you to study harder and improve your
marks. At the same time, youll be gaining
experience to put on your resume. All this will
    be benefit you after graduation.

7
Can You Work a Summer Job?
  • An alternative to working throughout the
school year is to just work over the summer. If
this is available to you, it may be more
practical than trying to fit studying and working
    into your schedule.

8
  • Getting a part-time job is particularly
useful if youd prefer not to live on campus and
are instead looking at student rentals. St
Catharines students can use the extra money at
their disposal to afford Niagara College student
housing like premiere suites. These are safer and
more comfortable than other types of housing.
Plus, as youll be living near other students,
youll have plenty of time to socialize even
though youll be taking time out of your schedule
    to work.
