  • A demat account holds your shares and securities
    in an electronic format.
  • To open demat account you have to approach a
    depository participant (DP).
  • The DP will give a account opening form. You have
    to fill and submit the form along with the
    required documents and the physical shares.
  • The DP will open and update the account and
    deface the physical certificates.
  • The DP will give you your account number.
  • It takes a few days for the account to be
    available to you.

Requirements for Dematerialising the Shares
Demat Account
  • You can dematerialise the shares in your name
    only. This is the requirement of the demat
    account opening process.
  • If the shares have to be transferred in your name
    then you cannot dematerialise them till they are
    transferred in your name.

What is Depository Participant
Demat Account
  • The depository participant are banks, brokers and
    the financial institutions.
  • The depository participant is an intermediary
    between the depository and the investor. DP is
    authorized to offer depository services to the
    investor.
  • The depositories of India are CDSL and NSDL.
  • The list of depository participants is available
    at the websites of the two depositories.
  • The Depository Act governs the relationship
    between the DP and the depository.

How to Operate a Demat Account

  • Once you have a demat account you can trade
    online.
  • When you buy shares through a broker the shares
    are credited to the demat account. The broker
    gives the DP instructions to debit his clearing
    account and credit your demat account.
  • When you sell shares through a broker the shares
    are debited from your demat account. You have to
    give instructions to the DP to debit your demat
    account and credit your brokers account.
