The Learning Management System (LMS) software
market is growing rapidly. A few years back,
LMSes were used within the reach of only large
corporates. Fast forward today, there are
hundreds of low-cost LMS options available which
are growing the LMS adoption in small and
medium-size companies.
3
What are the Learning Management System
requirements that small and medium-size companies
look for?
4

1. User Friendliness
Difficulty in learning the system is one of the
top 5 LMS software challenges across all sizes of
organizations. Especially for small
organizations, lack of time, skill sets, and
budget for training on the new software makes it
important for them to choose a LMS that is easy
to use and users can get started using it within
no time. Elegant LMS design can help in engaging
the learners with the course material.

2. Flexible Payment Options
Small and medium-size companies are generally
pressed on budget and they dont necessarily want
to commit a huge investment right in the
beginning. They need the flexibility of Pay as
you go and options to upgrade or downgrade any
time. LMS tools which require investment and
commitment right in the beginning may not be the
best options for them because they think before
making any investment.

3. Easy Configuration
LMS implementation budgets vary based on the size
of the companies. While large organizations might
be willing to spend a lot of time and money on
the LMS implementation, smaller companies might
need the LMS to be up and running within a very
small budget, in no time. Small companies cant
afford to disrupt business operations while the
LMS is being configured. Hence, it is important
for small companies to pick the LMS that is easy
to configure and setup.

4. Customizations
No more compromises on the features and user
interface despite low budgets. Small companies
can now pick from options to customize the LMS as
per their needs. Some features include
flexibility to turn on/ turn off the features,
change the time zones and date formats, and white
label the tool as per the company branding, and
to add new features which are required for the
specific needs of the organization.

5. Ease Of Deployment
Small and medium companies often dont want to
spend time and money on setting up the LMS
infrastructure. They have neither the budgets nor
the bandwidth. Also, the infrastructure
management with upgrades, security, etc. will
come at an additional cost. Hence, they have
started exploring cloud-based LMS options which
are offered as SaaS, giving them the flexibility
to get started quickly.

6. Data Security
SaaS offering does not mean lack of data
security. With the rising popularity and adoption
of the cloud, a lot of measures are being taken
for data security on the cloud. All you need to
do is just ensure that the vendor you select is
sensitive about data security and has implemented
measures such as separate databases for each
customer and SSL encryptions.

7. Avoiding The Feature Overload
The more features any product offers, the less
happy we are while using it. Companies look for
an LMS that offers features of their use and
which they need. Hence, an LMS with regular
features along with a few other important
features is more preferred. Some additional
features the LMS must offer include SCORM
compliance, custom reporting, scheduling of
reports, and eCommerce.

8. Support
No matter how well-versed you are with software
implementation, you are going to need a little
support to get started with using the LMS. When
you choose the LMS vendor, do check for the LMS
documentation, knowledgebase, and availability of
online tutorials. Availability of a 24 X 7
support will be an icing on the cake!
