HOW TO PERFECTLY PILOT YOUR DRONE FOR THE BEST
CINEMATIC SHOTS

  • While drones can be immensely rewarding and easy
to use to be able to capture jaw dropping
footage, there is no easy way of being able to
capture perfect cinematic shots without countless
    hours of practice.
  • One main piece of advice that all drone pilots
will impart to you, whether theyre professional
pilots who make their living from drones, or
those who use them purely for recreational
purposes, is to fly your drone as

3
  • smoothly and slowly as possiblefeather the stick
inputs in every direction change. Fast and/or
sudden moves of the drone will cause it to shake
about, and the footage you take will reflect
this, offering images that flicker about on the
screen and make the viewer feel nauseous as the
    footage tilts at dizzying angles.

4
  • Tip number one
  • When you first start out flying, dont plan to
capture perfect clips more than 10 seconds at a
time. Flying the drone high and then swooping it
down, attempting to try to achieve a cinematic
effect, is a move that even the pros find
tricky. Better that you begin by focusing on slow
camera movements with minimal movement, and
taking short shots and doing them well.

5
  • Tip number two
  • Try to make the smallest of movements on the
sticks, and if you can get some practice on a
simulator, that usually helps too. Great shots
are never captured when the stick is moved a lot,
so practice frequently to master the technique.

6
  • Tip number three
  • In the world of animation and video effects, this
technique is called handles. Flying through a
shot is essential for editing purposes and to
ensure that footage doesnt begin and end
abruptly when you have the desired shot,
continue moving for a few seconds and do the same
in the build up to the shot, too.

7
  • Tip number four
  • Wherever possible, try to avoid shooting in the
same direction as the sun, and never shoot
directly into it. Videos taken in direct
sunlight will be full of shadows that have been
cast onto the lens, and if the sunlight catches
any dust on the lens, it will cause it to shine
and spoil the footage. Dusting and cleaning your
lens thoroughly before you plan to fly should
    prevent this from happening.

8
  • Your best cinematic shots will undoubtedly only
arise after many, many hours of practice, but
when you do wow your audience with some inspiring
footage, it will all be worth it.
