Best Tips For Location Scouting
2
Break Down The Script
Choose a site that matches the setting of your
story. After its locked to establish what you
want from each location. Remember, its just a
tool helping you to tell the story, like anything
else, so dont get distracted by cool, but
irrelevant locations. Find the ones that are best
for your script and characters.

Scout At The Right Time
It's wise to check your spot on the day of the
week and the time of day that you'll be taping
these factors can produce surprisingly large
changes on the suitability of a location.
Automobile traffic and noise, entertainment
spots, and tourists at scenic all come in waves
that vary dramatically based on the time of day,
the day of the week and the season.

Check For Power Sources
Not all of the locations can handle a full-scale
shoot, especially if youre going to use a lot of
powerful lights. Youd like to avoid circuit
breaks when you plug in all your equipment, so a
generator may be handy. Note though, that it
produces a lot of noise itself.

Toilet Facilities
Are they at hand? Never forget about that -
primal needs are not to be taken lightly. Youll
also need a quiet room where actors can make up
and get ready. And preferably yet another room
apart from the set where people can eat and chill
during breaks.

Do The Technical Scout
The tech scout involves your DP, Gaffer, Grip,
Sound Recordist, and AD, if available.  Once the
decision is made. Key members of the crew -
cinematographer, grip, electrician, sound
recordist - all of them would like to know the
specifics of a location before the actual shoot
begins.

Get Permission
Be aware that you'll need to secure permits and
other legal permissions to shoot at certain
locations. As you're looking at a location, do a
legal reality check. Cemeteries, malls, grocery
stores, corporations and businesses are all
private property. Many owners will be happy to
accommodate you if you ask, but if not, you'll
need to choose another location.
