IN VITRO FERTILIZATION(IFV)
2
INTRODUCTION
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a
  • complex series of procedures
  • used to treat fertility or genetic
  • problems and assist with the
  • conception of a child.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the joining of a
womans egg and a mans sperm in a laboratory
dish. In vitro means outside the body.
Fertilisation means the sperm has attached to and
    entered the egg.
  • Normally, an egg and sperm are fertilised inside
a womans body. If the fertilised egg attaches to
the lining of the womb and continues to grow, a
baby is born about 9 months later.
  • This process is called natural or unassisted
    conception.

What Causes of Infertility Can IVF Treat?
  • Endometriosis (Endometriosis is a condition in
which the tissue that normally lines the uterus
(the endometrium) grows outside it. It usually
affects the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, intestines,
    rectum, or bladder.)
  • Low sperm counts (A low sperm count, also called
oligozoospermia, is where a man has fewer than 15
million sperm per millilitre of semen. Having a
low sperm count can make it more difficult to
    conceive naturally, although successful
    pregnancies can still occur.)
  • Problems with ovulation (Ovulation is the release
of an egg from your ovaries.
  • Inside your ovaries lie many ovarian follicles.
These follicles are tiny sacs that contain your
    eggs.)

4
  • Problems with the uterus
  • or Fallopian tubes
  • (The fertilization occurs in the
  • womans fallopian tubes, not
  • in her vagina or uterus. If the
  • fallopian tubes are blocked
  • and the egg released from
  • your ovaries cant pass through the blockage,
the egg and the sperm cant meet to allow
    fertilization to occur.
  • Antibody problems that harm sperm or eggs (The
presence of sperm antibodies reduces male
fertility significantly, but does not usually
    prevent conception altogether.)

5
  • The inability of sperm to penetrate or survive in
the cervical mucus (Cervical mucus is intended by
nature to work as a guide, helping push sperm
along through the vagina and into the cervix and
beyond, as well as offer important nutrients to
give the sperm the energy it needs for the long
journey ahead, in some cases it can actually work
against the sperm it is intended to help.)
  • An unexplained fertility problem (IVF may also be
an option if your doctor cant pinpoint the
problem or if other treatments have been
    unsuccessful.)
