A beginners guide to portrait photography 6 tips
2
Whether you are taking portraits of your friends
or family, you must realize that the quality of
your equipment doesnt necessarily play the most
significant role in your portrait photography.
Your technique does. These tips can definitely
come in handy for that purpose of yours.
3
Exposure compensation
Your cameras metering system decides the amount
of light that enters into the camera to make the
correct exposure. Light skin tone might easily
trick your camera into underexposing the shot.
This can be corrected by using the cameras
Exposure Compensation controls.
4
Aperture tips
When taking portraits, its highly recommended
for you to go for wide aperture (around
f/2.8-f/5.6). This will result in blurring out
your subjects background aiding him/her to stand
out better in your photograph.
5
Increase your cameras ISO
If you want to keep motion blur at bay, you have
to youll have to use a fast shutter speed. To
increase your shitter speed, you just have to
crease your ISO (say from ISO200 to ISO400).
6
Choice of lens
Your choice of lens affects your portrait
photography. Use a wide-angle lens for shooting
portraits with visual impact. Use a medium
telephoto lens to use the background as a
complement to the subject. A rule of thumb-
Using a telephoto lens like a 70-200mm f/2.8 is
definitely one of the best tools to create
stunning portraits.
7
Use a reflector
Using a reflector is definitely a quick and
affordable way to brightening up your portraits
and giving them a professional look. Use
reflectors indoors or outdoors to reflect light
back on to your subject to fill in those unwanted
shadows.
8
Focusing the camera
With widely composed photos, focus particularly
on the subjects head with tightly composed
photos on the other hand, focus particularly on
the eyes. To achieve pin point focusing, manual
selection of the single autofocus (AF) point is
recommended.
