PLAN OF TALK
  • INTRODUCTION
  • PRESENT WORK
  • RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
  • CONCLUSIONS

3
INTRODUCTION
  • Lead zirconate titanate is an intermetallic
inorganic compound with the chemical formula
    PbZrxTi1-xO3 (0x1). Also called PZT.
  • it is a ceramic perovskite material that shows a
    marked piezoelectric effect.
  • Being piezoelectric, PZT develops a voltage (or
potential difference) across two of its faces
when compressed, or physically changes shape when
an external electric field is applied,
  • It is used in a number of practical applications
    such as sensor applications, ultrasonic
    transducers and piezoelectric resonators.

4
Poling Mechanism
  • The central shifting ion in the tetragonal unit
cell of PZT allows the material to be a
    dielectric and a piezoelectric.

Poling Direction
  • Since the central ion can only move in the c
direction, the domains must align so this can
occur. Poling direction domains effectively grow.

5
Present work
  • The mechanical strength of poled lead zirconate
titanate (PZT) has been studied using
ball-on-ring (BoR) biaxial flexure tests with a
high electric field applied concurrently. Both
the as received and the aged PZT specimens were
    tested
