  • As we age, our ability to read deteriorates. By
our early to mid-40s, most of us (about 55
million Americans) need reading glasses. Certain
conditions can make the task even more
    difficultpoor lighting, elaborate typefaces,
glossy pages. Fortunately, there are a number of
things you can do to make reading both easier and
more pleasurable. From reading eyeglasses to
lighting adjustments, here are the most useful
    tips for reading print.

3
  • Larger type makes for easier reading. Buy print
books that feature larger text if you struggle to
read fine print. Upsizing is even easier with a
tablet, smartphone, or computer. On computers,
simply increase the size to at least 16 or 18
points to make text more readable. Most
smartphones or e-devices also have simple options
    for increasing text size.

4
  • One way to make text readable is to get closer.
With print media, that means holding the book or
magazine near your eyes. You can also use a
magnifying glass. Computers and e-readers are
usually equipped with a handy zoom function,
making it even easier to focus in tight. But
ultimately, reading glasses are hands-free and
    personalized.

5
  • Its one of the oldest solutions in the book, and
its still the best Reading eyeglasses. Whether
youre scanning through an e-reader or skimming
through an old-fashioned book, a pair of
    prescription quality readers glasses, or
readers, remains the tried-and-true method for
making text legible. Throw in durable and
ultra-lightweight frames, and reading can be as
    comfortable as it is enjoyable.

6
  • Even when wearing prescription strength readers,
dim light can affect your ability to make out
fine print. Make sure you have enough light on
the page to illuminate the text properly. If you
can, get a dedicated reading lamp. Many newer
e-readers also offer screens that light up.

7
  • Glare from a light source also gives plenty of
people trouble, particularly when theyre trying
to read text on reflective screens. If the window
is directly behind or in front of you, or if a
light is shining directly into the screen, youll
have to work at least twice as hard to read the
same text. Adjust your position, the position of
your computer, or the position of the
    lightwhichever is easiest.

8
  • Sometimes a little contrast is all you need. Dark
text stands out best on white backgrounds. The
darker the text, and the whiter the background,
the easier it is to read. For older people, the
opposite tends to be truewhite or light yellow
text on a dark background usually works the best.

9
  • Some e-readers and tablets let you change the
font. Read at least one full page in each font,
then select the typeface that works the best for
you. That ideal typeface may be different for
different people, but generally, the less you
notice the font, the better. Decorative fonts are
    best avoided at all costs.

10
  • Glossy paper reflects the light, and that can
make the glare problem even worse. People who
struggle with reading text should avoid glossy
magazines or books whenever possible. If you do
have to read something printed on glossy pages,
return to tip 5 and adjust the lighting to
    minimize the glare.
