1
How to take care of yourself after a dental
surgery
  • Dental surgeries sometimes become inevitable.
There are conditions where we need to undergo
dental surgeries in order to have better teeth
within our oral cavity. Although dental surgeries
for dental implants or for that matter any other
condition are considered simple and generally
performed under local anesthesia still the care
that the patient needs after a dental surgery
decides the comfort level and the time it will
take for the patient to heal from the surgery.
Generally patients do not take much time to heal
and come back to their normal self if they follow
    the advice from their dentist.
  • Painkillers and antibiotics for the dental
    surgery to heal are must
  • Your dentist is going to prescribe a few
painkillers and antibiotics after the surgery.
Check with the dentist if you need to have the
painkillers only after you feel the pain or do
you need to have them proactively.

2
Do let your dentist know if you are allergic to
any kind of antibiotics. The antibiotics are
there to heal the surgery wounds fast. If you are
diabetic or have a condition of hypertension or
high blood pressure do let your dentist know in
advance about your conditions along with any
drugs or medicines you have to keep your
condition stable. Antibiotics generally have a
course duration thus if your dentist has asked
you to have the antibiotics for five days you
need to have them for five days without fail.
Leaving the antibiotics in between will worsen
your condition and your healing maybe
delayed. Take ample of rest after the dental
surgery After the dental surgery you may feel
the urge to go back to work but do not be in a
hurry to get back to work irrespective of how
important it is. Give some time to your body to
come out of the blood loss and the stress it has
gone through while you were in the dentists
chair to remove one of your decayed tooth or
getting a screw placed in your oral cavity for
that dental implant you are about to fix into
your jaw line. The body will need to replenish
and soothe itself before you going to back to
work. A full day rest if you have had a minor
surgery in the morning will be sufficient for
your body to rejuvenate and get back to its old
condition. However if you have had a major dental
surgery check with your dentist and get a slip
from him for the number of days he wants you to
rest.
3
Check for the bleeding, swelling and
numbness After the surgery once you are home
check for the numbness around the part where
local anesthesia had been given to you. If the
area is numb even after six hours you need to
check with your dentist since the numbness needs
to go after six hours. Your surgeon/dentist may
need to inject steroids to reduce the numbness
and swelling. Steroids will help speed up the
recovery process. Make sure to keep the gauge pad
in place to control bleeding. Even if bleeding
does not stop with the gauge pad in place or the
gauge pad is disturbed and bleeding starts
uncontrollably you need to see your dental
surgeon immediately as a temporary measure till
you reach your dental surgeon try biting a gauge
pad or a tea bag. It will help clotting and
stopping the blood for some time.   Brushing
should be done softly for a few days After a
dental surgery you need to brush your teeth once
your dentist tells you to do so. However make
sure to use a tooth brush with soft bristles and
brush softly especially around the area where the
surgery has been carried out. You dont need to
stop brushing its just that you need to pay heed
to your dentists advise of when to start
brushing.
4
Avoid too hot, cold, sticky and hard food after
a dental surgery For a few days after the
surgery avoid biting on hard food. Sticky food
should be avoided at all costs and temperature of
anything you eat need to be moderate - neither
too hot nor too cold. Your dentist may even
prescribe you medicated toothpaste for the time
being since teeth become sensitive especially
after surgery. Article Resource-https//prodent
