Some may believe becoming a voice over artist is
just simply standing behind a mic and performing
some lines without the effort to put any
expressions, but it is much more than that. But
as like any other talent in the entertainment
industry, with regular practice and mastering the
below described tips, you can become a successful
voice over artist.

Performance
Standing in front of a mic is all about giving
the best from the lines you have memorized. But
as for training yourself, take the script, start
recording, and try a few lines as you would in an
actual performance. Stop the recording and listen
back in your headphones to see how well you did.
If you are a starter, then its normal to find
your recording sounding strange. The point is,
you need to be very vigilant with your
performance.

Listen closely for jargons, special phrases and
accents. Take care of the timing and your voice
flow. Try the recordings repetitively if
necessary to catch any changes or improvements
required. Make notes of lines or words that seem
difficult to put on tongue.

Listen To Experts
If you are lost somewhere regarding how to
deliver your performance, take a break and watch
some related commercials. Try to read the actors
performance and figure out how closely you can
mimic them. Although dont try to mirror their
performance, as you have your own style to work
on. Try to catch important elements from their
performance and incorporate them in your style.
You can push your voice a little stronger to add
variations in multiple recordings. Remember, your
voice should be vocal enough to capture the
audience interest without getting distractions
from visuals.

Analyze The Recordings
Once you have enough number of recordings, now
its time to analyze through each. Listen through
all the takes and separate out the best versions.
Get recorded the entire script regardless of the
sequence (you can arrange them later). However,
if you come across a section you find is poorly
recorded, you can always have a retake.

Files Management
With the large number of recording files you now
have, it is better to stack them in order for
future convenience. Keep the new files separately
and old files stored as a backup. When all the
voice over segments have been properly edited,
listed and placed as per their designated
locations, import the pile into your video
project.

Delivery
Before you hand over your final voice over files
to the client, try to play the recordings on
different systems such as your home theatre
system, car speakers, etc. The purpose is to note
the differences in vocals, tone, and your pitch
which helps you in catching any discrepancies if
there are any. Fix the changes required you feel
before the clients catches it. Even after
delivery, always expect the client to demand some
changes. Act accordingly till the client is
happily satisfied with your work.
