Title: Why Copper Sheets used for Roofing Purpose

1
Top 4 Reasons Why Copper Sheets are Extensively
used for Roofing Purpose
Copper roofing has been used in buildings since
la long time because it has the natural potential
to form a protective green layer and enhance the
visual impact of the building. Several buildings
today comprise of copper sheets because of the
beneficial characteristics it contains.
2
In fact, copper was used as a roofing material on
a large scale in the 19th century. With the
prominence of mechanization and standardization
in the production of sheets, the material started
to be used increasingly.
Reasons For Copper Roofing Apart from the
historical use of copper, sheets of copper are
even used today in order to form roofs. In fact,
here are some of the top reasons for its use as a
roofing metal.
3
1. Water resistant covering
These sheets of copper act as great protective
layer because of its water resistant feature. It
is capable of covering even the minimum of joints
between two sheets. The roof slopes can be
covered at lower pitches in copper compared to
other metals. This in turn certainly provides a
way for a smooth surface in different forms of
architecture. Moreover, with a higher melting
point, it is even resistant to fire, and hence
can be used in valuable structures.
4
2. Less density
It is true that several other metals like lead,
zinc, aluminum, stainless steel can provide a
smooth surface, but the density of copper is
lower compared to these metals. In addition to
that, copper sheets have greater tensile
strength. The combination of these
characteristics makes copper thinner and light in
weight. Consequently, the amount of structure
required for supporting it is less.
5
3. The protective coating
Since copper has the tendency to corrode it
oxidizes to form of a green protective layer. In
fact, corrosion of the outer layer protects the
layer inside making it last for more than 100
years. The color also creates a prominent visual
impact in the buildings.
4. The Installation Of Sheets
As mentioned, there was a time when most of the
roofing was carried out with copper sheets, and
they were joined at the sides with vertical
seams. Clips were attached to the roof in between
the sheets. However, with the advancement in
technology and development of thin sheets, a
system of vertical joints was developed.
6
  • A wooden roll was used to fix to the roof. The
edges of the sheets were turned up so that they
could be placed over the welted roll.
  • Further developments allowed more allowance for
thermal expansions making it easy to form
    junctions.
  • As time progressed, several experimentation were
continued to find out the ideal laying method for
    these sheets in the roof.
  • Longer copper sheets are used today for
    economical reasons.
  • The method uses long trays of sheet with fewer
clips and cross welts compared to the traditional
    method.
  • The long standing seams are formed often by
machines for greater stability and resistance.
