exposed to everyday living. Keep your marble

Cleaning - Like most other surfaces, natural
stone must be cleaned regularly to keep it
sanitary, maintain its appearance, and preserve
its life. Professional stone cleaning is
recommended every six to 12 months and is
especially important for stone floors. These hard
surfaces with stay shiny and beautiful if they
are regularly cleaned, polished, and buffed. In
addition, grout is scrubbed and areas that were
once heavily soiled are transformed. Grinding -
When stone surfaces contain uneven tiles, called
lippage, or the stone is deeply scratched or
stained, a process called grinding is typically
used. A diamond disc is used to sand and remove
large portions of the stone and the process is
contained so no dust is created. Any additional
holes created on a travertine floor are filled to
increase durability.

Honing - After it is ground, the stone must be
smoothed with very fine diamond abrasives. Called
honing, this process removes remaining scratches
and rounds the edges of the stone, creating a
smoother finish. A compound is frequently used to
aid in the process, which is often done wet. This
prepares the surface to be polished. Polishing
-Polishing is the final step in the process and
is what makes the stone shine. A floor machine
uses a polyester fiber pad or a cloth, as well as
water, to work a powdered abrasive onto the
stone. This powder is worked into a semi-liquid
state called slurry and used to polish the stone.
This slurry is then removed with a mop or wet
vacuum and the floor is rinsed to remove any
remaining powder. The entire process may sound
simple but much practice is required. Having a
professional do the work eliminates the worry of
making any mistakes and provides the most
impressive results.
