Blood Vessels
  • Are TUbe

Blood Vessels are tubes that carry blood to all
parts of our body. Some blood vessels carry blood
from our heart to all parts of our body. Other
blood vessels carry blood from other parts of our
body back to our heart
6
Vessels
Heart
  • Are TUbe

Our Heart is the vital organ that pumps blood all
the time, to all parts of our body. Our heart is
made of a special muscle called heart muscle. The
muscle allows our heart to pump blood. We cant
control our heart muscles.

Pulse
How is our pulse measured?
11
Our pulse rate
  • Each heartbeat is a cycle of contraction and
relaxation of our heart muscles. With every
heartbeat, blood is pumped through our blood
vessels, causing them to expand and relax.
  • After every heartbeat,a wave of pressure passes
along our blood vessels. It is similar to a
ripple that spreads outwards from heart and
pushes the blood through the blood vessels. This
    is known as our pulse

12
  • We can take our pulse by pressing two fingers on
our wrist . The number of pulses in a minute is
our pulse rate. Our pulse rate shows the number
of times our heart beats in a minute. This is
also called our heart rate. The rheart rate of
an average healthy adult is 60 70 times per
    minute.

13
Factors that affect our heart rate
  • Our heart rate changes with our age, health and
the type of activity we are doing.
  • Health

Age

Activity
14
Age
  • Our heart rate decreases as we grow older
  • Babys heart rate
  • 120 times per minute
  • Adults heart rate
  • 60 90 times per minute
  • Elderly persons heart rate
  • 60-80 times per minute

15
Health
  • The heart rate of a healthy person is usually
slower than that of sick person. A fast heart
rate is also sometimes a sign of an illness.

16
Activity
  • When we exercise, our heart rate increases. This
happens because our heart needs to bring more
blood to different parts of our body. These parts
need the oxygen and food that are carried by the
    blood to produce more energy

17
Illnesses related to our circulatory system
What are some illnesses related to the ciculatory
system?
  • Our circulatory system is an important system in
our body. Damage to a part of our circulatory
system may cause sickness or even death.
  • Illnesses of the circulatory system may affect
    our
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart and blood vessels
  • Blood
  • Here are the common illnesses related to
    circulatory system

18
Blood Pressure
  • Hypertension
  • Hypertension is also known as high blood
pressure. It can lead to other medical conditions
such as arteriosclerosis, heart attack, stroke,
    and kidney failure.
  • Hypertension may be caused by smoking, a diet
high in fat or salt, being overweight, lack of
exercise, and even a high stress level in our
    life.

19
Heart and Blood Vessels
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • A healthy diet is very important for the proper
functioning of our circulatory system. If we have
a diet with too much fat, fatty substances may
collect on the inner walls of our arteries.
Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood
from our heart to all parts of our body

20
Arteriosclerosis
  • Over time, the walls of the affected arteries
    stiffen. This condition is called
    arteriosclerosis. Blood flow becomes restricte
and blood clots may develop in the blood vessels.
Such clots may lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

21
Damage in the heart or blood vessels
  • Certain diseases destroy the heart valves that
control the direction of blood flow through the
    heart.
  • Some children suffer from congenital heart
disorders as a result of incomplete development
of the heart or its blood vessels before birth.
Surgery is needed to correct such disorders.

22
Blood
  • Anaemia
  • Anaemia is a disease of the blood. This disease
occurs when the amount of red blood cells in our
body is low. Since red blood cells carry oxygen,
there will be a lack of oxygen carried to the
    cells in our body.
  • Anaemia is caused by a lack of iron in our diet
or large amounts of blood loss.

23
Leukimia
  • A more serious disease of the blood is leukimia.
It is also known as cancer or the blood or bone
marrow. This disease occurs when white blood
cells multiply abnormally in the bone marrow.

24
Keeping our circulatory system healthy
  • A healthy circulatory system can be achieved
through a healthy diet and lifestyle. This means
    that we should
  • Exercise regularly
  • Not smoke, consume alcohol or take drugs
  • Have a balanced diet
  • Drink a lot of water
  • Go for annual body checkup
